I felt a lump in the areola?
Hello, recently I noticed a hard lump about the size of a green bean located just above the nipple on the right breast, at the position of the areola.
I can only feel it when lying down; I cannot feel it when standing or sitting.
It feels quite smooth and can be slightly moved, but it's not very easy to push.
There is also a bit of sharp pain during the pushing or pressing process.
What could this be? I am expecting my menstrual period in six days, but I currently do not have any sensation of breast engorgement.
Thank you.

More Info
When it comes to discovering a hard lump on the areola, particularly one that is only noticeable when lying down, there are several potential causes to consider. The lump you describe, about the size of a green bean, smooth, and movable, could be a benign condition, but it is essential to approach this with caution and seek medical advice.
Possible Causes of the Lump
1. Fibroadenoma: This is a common benign tumor in young women, often described as a smooth, firm lump that can be moved slightly under the skin. They are usually painless but can sometimes cause discomfort.
2. Cysts: Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the breast tissue. They can feel like a lump and may be tender, especially before menstruation.
3. Hormonal Changes: Given that you are approaching your menstrual period, hormonal fluctuations can lead to breast tissue changes, including the formation of lumps. These lumps may be more noticeable during certain times of your cycle.
4. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions like mastitis or a breast abscess can cause lumps that may be painful and are often associated with redness and swelling. However, these typically present with more pronounced symptoms.
5. Lipoma: A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fat tissue. They are usually soft, movable, and painless.
6. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: Though less common, this condition can present with changes in the skin of the nipple and areola, and it may be associated with underlying breast cancer. Symptoms can include itching, redness, and flaking.
Concerns and Recommendations
While many lumps in the breast are benign, it is crucial to monitor any changes in size, shape, or associated symptoms such as pain, discharge, or changes in the skin. Given that you experience some pain when pressing on the lump, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies such as an ultrasound or mammogram to assess the lump further.
What to Do Next
1. Schedule an Appointment: Contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible. They will likely perform a physical examination and may order imaging tests to get a clearer picture of what the lump is.
2. Keep Track of Symptoms: Note any changes in the lump, such as growth or changes in pain levels, as well as any other symptoms like discharge or changes in your menstrual cycle.
3. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s tempting to search for answers online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety. A healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and peace of mind.
4. Consider Your Menstrual Cycle: Since you mentioned that your period is due in six days, it’s worth noting that hormonal changes can affect breast tissue. However, this does not replace the need for a medical evaluation.
In conclusion, while the lump you described could be benign, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious conditions. Early evaluation and diagnosis can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing concerns promptly is always the best course of action.
