Pain to the left of the navel?
Hello, I underwent a traditional right nephrectomy for kidney cancer at the end of June.
I often experience pain near the incision, to the left of my belly button, and it hurts when I press on it.
I consulted my doctor, and a CT scan showed no issues.
How should I manage this?

More Info
After undergoing a right nephrectomy for kidney cancer, experiencing persistent left abdominal pain near the surgical site can be concerning. While it is reassuring that a CT scan has ruled out any immediate complications, it is essential to understand the potential causes of this pain and the appropriate steps to manage it.
Possible Causes of Left Abdominal Pain Post-Surgery
1. Post-Surgical Pain: It is common for patients to experience pain after major surgeries, including nephrectomy. This pain can be due to the surgical incision, manipulation of tissues, or nerve irritation during the procedure. The pain may persist for weeks or even months as the body heals.
2. Scar Tissue Formation: After surgery, scar tissue (adhesions) can form as part of the healing process. These adhesions can sometimes cause discomfort or pain, especially if they affect surrounding organs or tissues.
3. Referred Pain: Pain can sometimes be referred from other areas of the body. For instance, issues with the diaphragm or other abdominal organs can manifest as pain in the left abdominal area.
4. Muscle Strain: The abdominal muscles may be strained during the surgery or due to changes in activity levels during recovery. This strain can lead to localized pain.
5. Infection or Complications: Although your CT scan did not show any issues, it is still important to monitor for signs of infection or other complications, such as abscess formation, which could present with pain.
Management Strategies
1. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate discomfort. However, it is crucial to follow your doctor's recommendations regarding medication use.
2. Physical Therapy: Engaging in gentle physical therapy or exercises, as recommended by your healthcare provider, can help strengthen the abdominal muscles and improve flexibility, potentially reducing pain.
3. Follow-Up Appointments: Since the pain has persisted for several months, it is advisable to schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon or primary care physician. They may recommend further evaluation or imaging studies to rule out any underlying issues that may not have been apparent on the initial CT scan.
4. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous activities can support your recovery and minimize discomfort.
5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, such as increased pain, changes in bowel habits, or any new symptoms. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the next steps.
6. Consideration of Other Specialists: If the pain persists despite conservative management, your doctor may refer you to a pain specialist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
Conclusion
While post-operative pain is a common experience, persistent discomfort should not be ignored. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns. They can help determine the best course of action to address your pain and ensure a smooth recovery. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking timely medical advice is crucial in managing post-surgical complications effectively.
