Surgery during menstruation?
Hello Dr.
Ke, I am the patient from question #203279 (sorry to ask another question).
I was thinking about the surgery date, and it seems it will coincide with my menstrual period.
After I left, I remembered this and went back to inform the nurse in the clinic (to request a change in the schedule), but the nurse said it wouldn’t affect me.
I would like to ask if having my period during the surgery will have any implications.
Besides the surgery itself, will it really not affect wound care? Also, since I don’t use tampons, would it be better to buy medication to delay my period from the pharmacy? Thank you.
Ping An, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/10
Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
Menstruation will not affect the surgery; however, if a warm water sitz bath is needed postoperatively, using tampons may be inconvenient.
Tampons are the first recommendation.
If you are unable to use them, you may consider rescheduling the surgery or taking medication to adjust your menstrual cycle.

When it comes to scheduling surgery during menstruation, there are several important factors to consider. First and foremost, it's essential to understand that having your period does not typically prevent you from undergoing surgery. Most surgeons agree that menstruation is not a contraindication for surgical procedures, and many women have surgeries while menstruating without any complications. However, there are some nuances to keep in mind.
1. Surgical Considerations: Depending on the type of surgery you are having, your menstrual cycle may have some impact. For example, if the surgery involves the pelvic area, the presence of menstrual blood could potentially complicate the procedure. Surgeons may need to take extra precautions to ensure a clear surgical field. However, for most surgeries, especially those not involving the reproductive organs, menstruation should not pose a significant issue.
2. Pain Management: Some women experience increased discomfort or cramping during their menstrual cycle, which could affect their overall comfort during and after surgery. If you are concerned about pain management, it is advisable to discuss this with your surgeon beforehand. They can provide guidance on pain relief options that can be adjusted based on your menstrual symptoms.
3. Postoperative Care: After surgery, proper wound care is crucial for recovery. While menstruation itself does not directly affect wound healing, the use of sanitary products may require some adjustments. If you are not comfortable using tampons, which are often recommended for ease of movement and hygiene, you can opt for pads. Just ensure that the pad does not interfere with the surgical site. It’s important to keep the area clean and dry to prevent infection.
4. Medication Considerations: If you are considering taking medication to delay your period, such as hormonal contraceptives, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider. They can advise you on the safety and appropriateness of using such medications in your specific situation. It’s also worth noting that some women may experience side effects from hormonal medications, which could complicate their recovery.
5. Communication with Your Healthcare Team: It’s vital to communicate openly with your surgeon and the nursing staff about your concerns regarding menstruation and surgery. They can provide tailored advice and reassurance based on your individual health needs and the specifics of your surgical procedure.
6. Emotional and Psychological Factors: For some women, the thought of having surgery while menstruating can cause anxiety. It’s important to address any emotional concerns with your healthcare provider. They can offer support and resources to help you feel more comfortable leading up to your surgery.
In summary, while having your period during surgery is generally not a cause for concern, it’s essential to discuss your specific situation with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and ensure that you are well-prepared for your surgery, regardless of your menstrual cycle. Remember, the focus should be on your overall health and the successful outcome of the surgical procedure.
