Yellow-Green Discharge: Is It a Sign of Trichomoniasis? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Yellow-green discharge

Hello, I have been experiencing vaginitis since around August or September, characterized by yellow-green discharge.
I have visited two gynecologists who both diagnosed it as a yeast infection.
The first time I got infected, I had gone swimming in the ocean, so I’m not sure if that contributed to the vaginitis.
However, I noticed that after having intercourse with my boyfriend, I experience green discharge and a burning sensation when urinating.
Could this be a trichomoniasis infection? We do not use condoms, but my boyfriend mentioned he had it a long time ago and hasn’t had any symptoms like painful urination recently.
It feels like it might be my issue, but after my last menstrual period, I didn’t have green discharge until I had intercourse with my boyfriend today, and it suddenly returned.
Could this possibly be a trichomoniasis infection? Thank you, doctor.

More Info

The presence of yellow-green discharge, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as itching, burning during urination, and a foul odor, can indeed be indicative of an infection. In your case, the symptoms you describe could potentially be linked to a few different conditions, including a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or trichomoniasis.

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It is known to cause yellow-green, frothy discharge, and can be associated with itching and irritation of the genital area. The burning sensation during urination you mentioned is also a common symptom of trichomoniasis. Given that you have had unprotected sexual intercourse and your boyfriend has a history of STIs, it is plausible that trichomoniasis could be a factor in your current symptoms.

However, it is important to note that other conditions can cause similar symptoms. For instance, a yeast infection, often caused by an overgrowth of Candida, can lead to thick, yellow-green discharge and significant itching. Bacterial vaginosis, another common condition, can also result in a change in discharge color and odor, often described as fishy.
The fact that you experienced these symptoms after sexual intercourse suggests that the activity may be exacerbating an underlying condition or that you may be experiencing a recurrent infection. It is also worth noting that the menstrual cycle can influence vaginal discharge, and some women may notice changes in discharge consistency and color at different times of the month.

Given your history of recurrent vaginal infections and the current symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and laboratory tests, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. This may include testing for trichomoniasis, yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and other STIs.
If trichomoniasis is confirmed, it is typically treated with antibiotics, and it is essential for both partners to be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. If the issue is related to a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, appropriate antifungal or antibacterial treatments will be prescribed.

In summary, while your symptoms could indicate trichomoniasis, it is essential to have a proper diagnosis from a healthcare professional. They can provide the necessary treatment and guidance to help alleviate your symptoms and prevent future infections. Additionally, practicing safe sex, such as using condoms, can significantly reduce the risk of STIs and other infections.
