Concerns After Hitting the Back of the Head
Last week, I hit my head and went to the hospital for an examination.
The doctor said it was just a mild concussion and did not arrange for any further tests.
They prescribed diphenhydramine and acetaminophen, with instructions to take them after meals three times a day.
However, due to my personal habit of only eating lunch and dinner, I would like to know if I can take diphenhydramine on an empty stomach, or if I can take it once before bed instead.
Currently, I take it at 7 PM on an empty stomach, once at 12 PM, and once after dinner.

More Info
After experiencing a concussion, it's crucial to be cautious about medication intake, especially regarding the timing and whether to take them on an empty stomach. In your case, you have been prescribed medications such as Diphenhydramine (often referred to as Benadryl) and Paracetamol (commonly known as Tylenol). Both of these medications can have specific recommendations regarding food intake.
Taking Medications on an Empty Stomach
1. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl): This medication is an antihistamine that can cause drowsiness. While it is generally recommended to take it with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort, it can be taken on an empty stomach if necessary. However, taking it with food may help reduce the risk of stomach upset, which can be beneficial, especially after a concussion when your body is recovering.
2. Paracetamol (Tylenol): This pain reliever is usually safe to take on an empty stomach. It does not typically cause stomach irritation like some other pain medications (e.g., NSAIDs like ibuprofen). However, taking it with food can help if you have a sensitive stomach or if you are experiencing nausea, which can sometimes accompany a concussion.
Recommendations for Your Medication Schedule
Given your current schedule of taking medications at 12 PM and after dinner, it is important to consider the following:
- Adjusting Timing: If you prefer to take your medications only twice a day (after lunch and dinner), you could consider taking Diphenhydramine before bed instead of during the day. This adjustment can help manage any drowsiness it may cause, allowing you to sleep better, especially if you are experiencing sleep disturbances post-concussion.
- Consistency: It is essential to maintain a consistent schedule for taking your medications. If you decide to take Diphenhydramine at bedtime, ensure that you do so regularly to establish a routine.
Monitoring Symptoms
After a concussion, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience increased drowsiness, confusion, or any worsening of your condition, you should consult your healthcare provider immediately. Additionally, if you notice any gastrointestinal discomfort after taking your medications, consider discussing this with your doctor, as they may recommend alternative medications or adjustments to your regimen.
Conclusion
In summary, while you can take Diphenhydramine on an empty stomach, it is generally advisable to take it with food to minimize potential side effects. Paracetamol can be taken without food, but if you have any concerns about your stomach or experience nausea, taking it with food is a good option. Adjusting your medication schedule to take Diphenhydramine at bedtime may also be beneficial, especially if it helps with sleep. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice, especially after a concussion, to ensure your recovery is on track.
