Side effects of emergency contraceptive pills?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask how long the breast swelling from emergency contraception lasts.
I had unprotected intercourse with ejaculation on December 7, and took the emergency contraceptive pill on December 8.
My ovulation day was around the same time, and about a week later, I started experiencing breast swelling that lasted for several days.
Could this be related to the side effects of the medication?
Thank you, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/18

More Info
Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) are designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. They are most effective when taken as soon as possible after the event, ideally within 72 hours, but some types can be taken up to 5 days later. Commonly used ECPs include levonorgestrel (Plan B) and ulipristal acetate (Ella).
One of the side effects that some individuals may experience after taking ECPs is breast tenderness or swelling. This can occur due to hormonal fluctuations caused by the medication. The active ingredients in ECPs can lead to changes in the body’s hormone levels, which may result in symptoms similar to those experienced during a menstrual cycle, including breast tenderness, bloating, and mood swings.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing breast swelling about a week after taking the emergency contraceptive pill. This timing aligns with the hormonal changes that can occur after taking ECPs. Generally, side effects such as breast tenderness can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the individual's hormonal response and the specific medication used. For most people, these side effects will gradually subside as the body adjusts and the hormones return to their normal levels.
It’s important to note that while breast tenderness can be a common side effect, it is not universally experienced by everyone who takes ECPs. If the swelling or tenderness persists for an extended period or is accompanied by severe pain, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider to rule out other potential causes.
Additionally, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy after taking ECPs, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test if your next menstrual period is delayed by more than a week. ECPs are effective, but no contraceptive method is 100% guaranteed.
In summary, the breast swelling you are experiencing is likely related to the hormonal effects of the emergency contraceptive pill, and it should resolve within a few days to a couple of weeks. If you have any further concerns or if the symptoms worsen, please reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
