There are bright, thread-like lines in front of my eyes?

Hello, Director Gao.
Sometimes my eyes are very itchy, and after rubbing them, I notice a lot of bright, string-like lines moving in front of my eyes for a moment.
They disappear completely after a few seconds to about a minute.
What could this problem be? Do I need to get it checked? Thank you.

Hello: It is possible that there is pressure on the retina causing discharge phenomena, or that the vitreous is moving and pulling on the retina.
In most cases, these symptoms do not require specific treatment.
However, if you suddenly experience a significant increase in floaters, flashes of light, or blurred vision, this may indicate a problem with the eyes, and you should seek medical attention promptly.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the experience of seeing bright, string-like lines in your vision, especially after rubbing your eyes. This phenomenon can be quite concerning, but let's break it down to understand it better.

What you are describing sounds like a common occurrence known as "floaters." Floaters are small, shadowy shapes that can appear in your field of vision, often resembling spots, threads, or cobwebs. They are typically caused by tiny pieces of gel or debris that float in the vitreous humor, the clear gel-like substance that fills the inside of your eye. When light passes through the eye, these floaters cast shadows on the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, leading to the visual disturbances you are experiencing.

Rubbing your eyes can temporarily increase the visibility of floaters because it may cause the vitreous gel to shift or pull slightly away from the retina, making these floaters more noticeable. This is generally harmless and often resolves on its own, as you have noted that the floaters disappear after a short period.

However, while floaters are usually benign, there are certain situations where they can indicate a more serious issue, such as retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. If you experience a sudden increase in floaters, especially if accompanied by flashes of light or a shadow in your peripheral vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms could suggest that the vitreous gel is pulling away from the retina, which can lead to more severe complications if not addressed promptly.

In your case, since the floaters appear after rubbing your eyes and resolve within a minute, it is likely a benign occurrence. However, if you find that this happens frequently, or if you notice any other changes in your vision, it would be wise to consult with an eye care professional. They can perform a comprehensive eye examination to ensure that everything is functioning properly and to rule out any potential issues.

In summary, while what you are experiencing is likely normal and related to the presence of floaters, it is always best to err on the side of caution. Regular eye check-ups are important, especially if you have any concerns about your vision. If you notice any alarming symptoms or changes, don’t hesitate to reach out to an eye care specialist for further evaluation. Taking care of your eye health is essential, and being proactive can help prevent potential issues down the line.
