Menstruation arrived early after taking medication?

In recent days, I contracted influenza A and took antiviral medication, such as Oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
However, my menstrual period started 5 days early.
Is this normal? Thank you, doctor.

Experiencing early menstruation after taking flu medication can be concerning, but it is important to understand the potential factors that could contribute to this change in your menstrual cycle.
Firstly, medications can have various effects on the body, and flu medications are no exception. While most flu medications, such as antivirals like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza), primarily target the influenza virus and are not directly linked to menstrual cycle regulation, they can still cause side effects that may indirectly influence your cycle. For instance, the stress of being ill, changes in your body’s hormonal balance due to illness, or even changes in your routine (such as sleep patterns, diet, and physical activity) can all impact your menstrual cycle.

In addition, some flu medications may contain ingredients that could potentially affect hormonal levels. For example, certain over-the-counter cold and flu medications may contain pseudoephedrine, which can affect blood flow and, in some cases, lead to changes in menstrual timing. However, these effects are generally not well-documented and can vary significantly from person to person.

It is also worth noting that menstrual cycles can naturally vary in length and timing due to a variety of factors, including stress, changes in weight, exercise levels, and other health conditions. If you have recently experienced a significant illness like the flu, your body may be responding to that stress, leading to an early period.
If your early menstruation is accompanied by other symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or if you have concerns about your menstrual health, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can help determine if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed or if this is simply a temporary change due to your recent illness.

In summary, while early menstruation after taking flu medication is not commonly reported, it can occur due to various factors, including the stress of illness and changes in your body’s hormonal balance. If you have concerns or if this change persists, seeking medical advice is always a good step to ensure your health and well-being.
