Can masturbation cause neck injuries?

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I hit my head and had an X-ray of my neck.
The doctor mentioned that there are two bone spurs and a herniated cervical disc.
I would like to ask, besides frequently using my phone, could poor posture and stiffness in my neck while masturbating also contribute to this? Will a herniated cervical disc heal on its own?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/22

Dr. Lai Zhaokang reply Neurosurgery

Hello: 1.
Cervical spine injuries in the general population are often caused by impacts to the head, whiplash injuries to the cervical spine, or prolonged periods of looking down or up while working, using a mobile phone, or having an inadequate pillow, which can lead to poor cervical posture and cumulative cervical spine strain, resulting in cervical spine disorders.
2.
A herniated cervical disc occurs when your own cartilage (intervertebral disc) deforms and protrudes.
It typically does not resolve on its own; however, the symptoms it causes can be alleviated through treatment.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Masturbation itself is not typically associated with causing neck injuries or exacerbating existing neck issues. However, the posture adopted during masturbation, especially if it involves bending the neck forward or holding the head in an awkward position for an extended period, could potentially contribute to neck strain or discomfort. This is particularly true if you already have underlying conditions such as cervical disc herniation or bone spurs, as you mentioned.

When it comes to your specific situation, the presence of bone spurs and a herniated disc in your cervical spine indicates that there are pre-existing structural issues that could be aggravated by poor posture during any activity, including masturbation. Poor posture, whether from prolonged smartphone use or other activities, can lead to muscle tension and strain, which may exacerbate symptoms associated with cervical spine conditions.
Cervical disc herniation occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc bulges out through a tear in the tougher exterior. This can lead to nerve compression, resulting in pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or neck. In some cases, herniated discs can heal on their own over time, particularly if the herniation is small and not causing significant nerve compression. However, this process can take weeks to months, and symptoms may persist during this time.

To manage your neck issues effectively, consider the following recommendations:
1. Posture Awareness: Be mindful of your neck position during all activities, including masturbation. Try to maintain a neutral spine position and avoid bending your neck forward for prolonged periods.

2. Ergonomic Adjustments: If you spend a lot of time on your phone or computer, ensure that your workspace is ergonomically designed to minimize strain on your neck. This includes keeping screens at eye level and using supportive seating.

3. Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can be beneficial. A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the neck muscles, improve flexibility, and teach you proper posture techniques.

4. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage pain and inflammation. However, consult with your healthcare provider before starting any medication.

5. Regular Breaks: If you are engaged in activities that require prolonged neck positions, take regular breaks to stretch and change positions. This can help alleviate tension and prevent stiffness.

6. Consultation with a Specialist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, consider consulting with a spine specialist or orthopedic surgeon. They can provide a more comprehensive evaluation and discuss potential treatment options, including the possibility of surgery if conservative measures fail.

In summary, while masturbation itself is unlikely to cause neck injuries, the posture adopted during the act could contribute to discomfort, especially in the presence of existing cervical spine issues. It is essential to maintain good posture and seek appropriate treatment for your neck condition to prevent further complications. If you have concerns about your symptoms or the healing process of your cervical disc herniation, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
