Penile vascular tumor issues?

Doctor, last month I noticed a red mole on the outer side of my foreskin.
Normally, it is a darker red color, but it turns bright red when it is rubbed or stimulated.
I visited a clinic, and the doctor said it is a hemangioma.
Can you tell me if the color of a hemangioma can change like this?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that can appear on the skin, often characterized by their red or purple color. They are composed of a mass of blood vessels and can vary in appearance and color based on several factors, including blood flow, temperature, and external stimuli. Your observation of the color changes in the hemangioma on your foreskin is consistent with typical behavior for these types of lesions.

When a hemangioma is at rest, it may appear darker red or even purplish due to the blood pooling within the vessels. However, when stimulated—whether through friction, pressure, or temperature changes—the blood vessels can dilate, leading to a brighter red appearance. This phenomenon occurs because the increased blood flow causes the hemangioma to become engorged with blood, making it more prominent and vivid in color. This is a normal response and is not indicative of any malignancy or serious condition.

In terms of medical understanding, hemangiomas are often classified into two types: infantile and adult. Infantile hemangiomas typically appear in infants and may grow rapidly before eventually involuting or shrinking over time. Adult hemangiomas, on the other hand, can appear later in life and may not regress as readily. Regardless of the type, the color changes you are experiencing are common and can be attributed to the vascular nature of the lesion.

It is also important to note that while hemangiomas are generally benign, any changes in size, shape, or color should be monitored. If you notice any significant changes or if the lesion becomes painful, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. In some cases, treatment options may be considered, especially if the hemangioma is causing discomfort or cosmetic concerns.

In summary, the color changes you are observing in your penile hemangioma are typical and can be attributed to the dynamic nature of blood flow within the lesion. If you have any further concerns or if the hemangioma changes in a way that causes discomfort or anxiety, seeking a follow-up with a dermatologist or a specialist in vascular lesions would be prudent. Regular monitoring and open communication with your healthcare provider will ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
