Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion delayed by one day?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my situation.
I had an IUD inserted on November 21 (Tuesday) and planned to have it removed on December 19 (four weeks later).
I was originally supposed to have a new IUD inserted on December 26 (Tuesday) around 9:00 PM, but due to certain reasons, I was unable to get the IUD that day.
If I delay it by one day and have the IUD inserted on December 27 (Wednesday) at 9:00 PM, can I start relying solely on the IUD for contraception after seven days from the insertion on December 27, which would be January 3 (Wednesday)?

Han, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/26

Hello, based on your situation, it is recommended to use additional contraceptive measures for seven days after placing the new contraceptive ring; after that, it is not necessary.
However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective.
If you replace the contraceptive ring every month and keep it in place, the effectiveness can be as high as 99%.
If you miss or delay inserting it, the effectiveness drops to 91%.
If you do not have a period after removing it, you should still check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to the effectiveness of an intrauterine device (IUD) after a delay in insertion, it is essential to understand how IUDs work and the implications of timing on their contraceptive efficacy. Based on your situation, where you initially planned to insert the IUD on December 26 but had to delay it by one day to December 27, here’s what you need to know.

IUDs are highly effective forms of contraception, with a failure rate of less than 1% when used correctly. However, the timing of insertion is crucial, especially if you are transitioning from one IUD to another or if there has been a gap in protection. In your case, since you had your previous IUD removed on December 19, there is a period where you may not have had contraceptive protection.

According to medical guidelines, when a new IUD is inserted, it typically takes about seven days for it to become fully effective if it is inserted during the menstrual cycle. If you insert the IUD outside of your menstrual cycle, it is recommended to use an additional method of contraception for the first seven days after insertion. Therefore, since you inserted the IUD on December 27, you would need to use an alternative contraceptive method until January 3. After this period, you can rely solely on the IUD for contraception.

It's also important to note that if you had unprotected intercourse during the time between the removal of the previous IUD and the insertion of the new one, there is a possibility of pregnancy. If you miss your period after the new IUD insertion, it would be wise to take a pregnancy test to rule out any possibility of pregnancy.

In summary, while a one-day delay in the insertion of your IUD does not significantly impact its long-term effectiveness, it does mean that you should take precautions for the first seven days following the insertion. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to ensure that you are following the best practices for your specific situation. They can provide guidance based on your health history and any other factors that may be relevant.
In conclusion, after inserting your IUD on December 27, you should use additional contraception until January 3, after which you can rely on the IUD alone for effective birth control. Always keep track of your menstrual cycle and any changes in your body, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider with any concerns or questions.
