Menstrual irregularities
Hello, Doctor.
I would like to inquire about my normal menstrual cycle, which is supposed to start on December 26.
However, I started bleeding on the morning of December 27, but by the evening, the bleeding had stopped.
I had sexual intercourse in early December, but we used condoms throughout the entire time, and I checked the condoms afterward to ensure they did not break.
My previous menstrual cycles have always been regular.
Mr. Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/12/27
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the failure rate of correctly using condoms is still about 5%.
It is recommended that if your period is a week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy or consult a physician for evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the potential causes and implications is crucial for maintaining reproductive health. In your case, experiencing a menstrual period that started on December 26 and ended abruptly on the evening of December 27, especially after a history of regular cycles, raises several considerations.
Firstly, it’s important to note that menstrual cycles can vary for a number of reasons. Stress, changes in weight, hormonal imbalances, and even illness can affect the regularity and flow of menstruation. Given that you mentioned having unprotected sexual intercourse in early December, it’s understandable to be concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, even with the use of condoms. While condoms are effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly, no contraceptive method is 100% foolproof. Therefore, if there is any doubt, taking a home pregnancy test could provide clarity.
Another potential cause for your irregular cycle could be hormonal fluctuations. The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, including estrogen and progesterone. Any disruption in this hormonal balance can lead to changes in the menstrual cycle, such as lighter periods or missed cycles. Factors such as significant weight loss or gain, excessive exercise, or even changes in sleep patterns can contribute to these hormonal shifts.
Additionally, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other underlying health issues can also lead to irregular menstrual cycles. If you have experienced other symptoms, such as weight changes, acne, or excessive hair growth, it may be worth discussing these with your healthcare provider.
In your case, since your menstrual cycle has been regular until now, it may be beneficial to monitor your cycle over the next few months. If you notice a pattern of irregularity or if your periods become consistently lighter or shorter, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, a pelvic ultrasound, or other diagnostic measures to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while occasional irregularities in menstrual cycles can be normal, especially in response to stress or lifestyle changes, persistent irregularities warrant further investigation. Keeping track of your menstrual cycle, noting any accompanying symptoms, and consulting with a healthcare provider can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Remember, your reproductive health is important, and seeking professional advice is always a good step when you have concerns.
