Coughing uncontrollably after oral sex?

Hello doctor, last Saturday evening I performed oral sex on my boyfriend and swallowed his semen.
That night, I started to feel a bit of a scratchy throat and had some mild coughing symptoms.
The next day, and for the past week, I have been continuously coughing, but that's the only symptom I have; I don't feel any other discomfort.
I'm worried it might be a sexually transmitted infection (STI), so I've researched a lot and have been using a flashlight to check my throat.
I haven't noticed anything unusual, just some redness in the uvula and the soft palate on both sides.
I suspect it might be due to coughing too hard, but I'm still very concerned.
Could this be an STI? 🥹 I don't think I'll ever dare to perform unprotected oral sex and swallow semen again...

Coughing after engaging in oral sex, especially if it involves swallowing semen, can understandably raise concerns about potential sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, it is essential to approach this situation with a clear understanding of the symptoms and their possible causes.

Firstly, the symptoms you are experiencing—persistent cough and a scratchy throat—can be attributed to several factors. While it is true that oral sex can transmit certain infections, the likelihood of developing a cough solely from this activity is relatively low, especially if you do not have other accompanying symptoms such as fever, significant pain, or visible lesions in the throat.

One possibility is that the cough and throat irritation could be due to irritation from the act itself. Oral sex can sometimes lead to minor trauma or irritation in the throat, especially if there is vigorous activity or if the individual has a sensitive gag reflex. This irritation can manifest as a scratchy throat and a cough, which may persist for several days.
Additionally, if you have been coughing frequently, it is possible that the cough itself is causing further irritation to your throat, leading to a cycle of discomfort. The redness you observed in the uvula and soft palate could be a result of this irritation rather than an indication of an infection.

Regarding the concern about STIs, while some infections can be transmitted through oral sex (such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and herpes), the symptoms typically associated with these infections would include more than just a cough. For instance, you might expect to see symptoms such as:
- Sore throat or pain when swallowing
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Fever
- Pus or lesions in the throat
- Unusual discharge
Since you mentioned that you have not experienced any of these additional symptoms, it is less likely that your cough is due to an STI. However, if you are still concerned, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination and possibly STI testing. This can provide peace of mind and help rule out any infections.

In the meantime, here are some recommendations to help alleviate your symptoms:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to keep your throat moist and help soothe irritation.

2. Gargle Salt Water: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce throat irritation and inflammation.

3. Use Throat Lozenges: These can provide temporary relief for a scratchy throat.

4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that could exacerbate your cough.

5. Rest Your Voice: Try to avoid talking too much or straining your voice, as this can further irritate your throat.

Lastly, it is essential to practice safe sex to minimize the risk of STIs in the future. Using barriers such as condoms or dental dams during oral sex can significantly reduce the risk of transmission of infections. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount.
