Can having one leg shorter than the other cause numbness in the feet?
Doctor, I have a noticeable leg length discrepancy (left leg longer than the right).
It is most apparent when I lie down.
I also feel a tingling sensation on the outer side of my right thigh, and there is not much sensation there.
My right knee feels strange and difficult to control.
Overall, it feels like almost half of my thigh has no sensation, and even when walking or jumping, the tingling sensation becomes more pronounced.
Is this related to my leg length discrepancy?

Hello, sometimes the feeling of having one leg shorter than the other may not necessarily be an issue with the lower limbs.
If there are also symptoms of lower limb weakness, numbness, or spinal conditions, further evaluation is needed.

Leg length discrepancy (LLD) can indeed lead to a variety of symptoms, including numbness and weakness in the affected leg. When one leg is shorter than the other, it can create an imbalance in the body’s mechanics, leading to compensatory changes in posture and gait. This can result in increased stress on the joints, muscles, and nerves, potentially causing discomfort and neurological symptoms such as numbness.
In your case, the noticeable difference in leg length, particularly with the left leg being longer than the right, may be contributing to the sensations you are experiencing in your right thigh and knee. The altered biomechanics can lead to muscle imbalances, where certain muscles may become overworked while others are underutilized. This can result in tightness, weakness, and even numbness in the affected areas.
The numbness you describe in your right thigh, particularly on the outer side, could be related to nerve compression or irritation. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which supplies sensation to the outer thigh, can become compressed due to postural changes or tight muscles in the hip region. Additionally, if the pelvis is tilted due to the leg length discrepancy, it can affect the alignment of the spine and hips, further contributing to nerve irritation.
Furthermore, the strange feeling in your right knee could be a result of altered mechanics during movement. When one leg is shorter, the body may compensate by shifting weight to the longer leg, which can lead to uneven loading of the knee joint. This can cause discomfort and a feeling of instability, particularly during activities like walking or jumping.
To address these issues, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist or orthopedic specialist, who can assess your specific situation. They may recommend a combination of treatments, including:
1. Physical Therapy: A tailored exercise program can help strengthen the muscles around the knee and hip, improve flexibility, and correct any imbalances caused by the leg length discrepancy.
2. Orthotics: Custom shoe inserts can help compensate for the leg length difference, providing better alignment and reducing strain on the joints.
3. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Focused exercises can help alleviate tightness in the hip and thigh muscles while strengthening the weaker muscles.
4. Postural Training: Learning proper body mechanics and posture can help reduce the compensatory patterns that lead to discomfort.
5. Pain Management: If necessary, your healthcare provider may recommend pain relief strategies, such as anti-inflammatory medications or modalities like heat or ice therapy.
In summary, leg length discrepancy can indeed contribute to symptoms such as numbness and weakness in the affected leg. It is crucial to seek professional evaluation and treatment to address these issues effectively. By implementing a comprehensive approach that includes physical therapy, orthotics, and proper exercise, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms and improving your overall function.
