Is bleeding after the removal of endometrial polyps considered menstruation?

Hello doctor, I underwent a uterine endometrial polyp removal (approximately 1.5 cm) on January 3rd.
After the surgery, I experienced light bleeding until yesterday evening (using a panty liner).
However, since last night (January 4th), the bleeding has suddenly increased to what seems like a normal menstrual flow (using a 23 cm sanitary pad).
Based on my previous menstrual cycle, January 5th could be considered the first day of my period.
I would like to know if this amount of bleeding could be classified as menstruation, and if I can wait until my follow-up appointment next week, or if I need to go to the emergency room directly.
Thank you.

Hello, it could be related to your menstrual cycle; just monitor the situation.

Post-polypectomy bleeding can indeed be a source of confusion, especially when it coincides with the expected timing of menstruation. In your case, you underwent a uterine polypectomy for a 1.5 cm endometrial polyp, and you experienced light bleeding for a couple of days post-surgery, followed by a sudden increase in bleeding that resembles a normal menstrual flow.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that some bleeding after a polypectomy is expected. The procedure involves removing tissue from the uterine lining, which can lead to some post-operative bleeding. This bleeding can vary in amount and duration, and it is typically lighter than a menstrual period. However, the sudden increase in bleeding you described could be concerning, especially if it resembles your typical menstrual flow.

In terms of differentiating between post-polypectomy bleeding and menstruation, there are a few factors to consider:
1. Timing: If your menstrual cycle is regular and you expected your period around this time, it could be difficult to distinguish between the two. However, if your surgery was close to your expected menstrual date, it’s possible that what you are experiencing is indeed your menstrual period.

2. Volume and Duration: Post-polypectomy bleeding usually starts light and may gradually increase but should not be as heavy as a normal menstrual period. If you are soaking through pads or tampons in an hour or less, this could indicate a problem, and you should seek medical attention.

3. Associated Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms such as severe pain, dizziness, or passing large clots. These could be signs of complications that require immediate medical evaluation.

4. Follow-Up: Since you have a follow-up appointment next week, it may be reasonable to monitor your symptoms until then, provided you are not experiencing heavy bleeding or other concerning symptoms. However, if the bleeding continues to be heavy or if you have any doubts, it is always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical attention sooner.

In summary, while post-polypectomy bleeding can sometimes mimic menstrual bleeding, the key factors to consider are the timing, volume, and any accompanying symptoms. If you feel that the bleeding is excessive or if you have any other concerns, it would be prudent to contact your healthcare provider or visit the emergency department for further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and it’s always best to consult with a medical professional when in doubt.
