Root canal treatment
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a question.
I previously had a root canal treatment on one of my teeth, so I have some understanding of the experience.
Now, I have another tooth that has a problem.
I went to a different dental clinic, and the doctor said I need a root canal.
He mentioned that he has drilled down to the nerve and administered medication.
I am scheduled to return for a follow-up next week or the week after.
However, the next day, my gums became swollen.
It's not an abscess or a pus pocket near the apex; rather, there is swelling in the area between the treated tooth and the one in front of it, as well as around the periodontal area (it's not pus-filled).
I would like to ask the doctor what I should do...
Since I am studying away from home, if I need to return for a follow-up, it will take at least a week.
However, the doctor has prescribed antibiotics and painkillers for me.
If I take them as directed, is there a chance that the pain will subside?

Dr. Lin Jiayong reply Dentistry
Hello: Please finish taking the medication prescribed by your doctor as scheduled.
Additionally, you can seek emergency treatment at a nearby dental clinic or hospital (which accepts walk-in appointments).
Also, contact your original clinic by phone to schedule a follow-up visit as soon as possible.

After undergoing root canal treatment, it is not uncommon to experience pain and swelling, especially if the procedure was complex or if there are multiple roots involved. Your situation, where the dentist has already accessed the nerve and administered medication, indicates that the treatment is still in progress. The swelling you are experiencing in the gum area could be due to several factors, including inflammation from the procedure, the body's response to the treatment, or even an infection.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that root canal treatment involves the removal of infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth. This process can sometimes lead to inflammation of the surrounding tissues, which may manifest as swelling and pain. The fact that you are experiencing swelling in the area between the treated tooth and the adjacent one suggests that there may be some inflammation in the periodontal tissues, which can occur after such procedures.
The antibiotics and pain medications prescribed by your dentist are crucial in managing your symptoms. Antibiotics will help combat any potential infection that may have developed, while pain relievers will assist in alleviating discomfort. It is important to take these medications as directed. If you are following the prescribed regimen and still experiencing significant pain or swelling, it is advisable to contact your dentist sooner than your scheduled appointment.
In the meantime, here are some additional measures you can take to manage your discomfort:
1. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing temporary relief.
2. Salt Water Rinse: Gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Just be careful not to swish too vigorously, as this may aggravate the area.
3. Avoid Hard Foods: Stick to soft foods that do not require much chewing. This will help minimize discomfort while eating.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid extremely hot or cold beverages that may trigger pain.
5. Rest: Ensure you get adequate rest, as your body needs energy to heal.
If the swelling does not subside or worsens, or if you develop a fever, it is crucial to seek immediate dental care. These could be signs of a more serious infection that may require further intervention.
In conclusion, while some discomfort and swelling after root canal treatment are expected, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Following your dentist's instructions regarding medication and taking additional steps to manage your pain can significantly help. If you find that your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your dentist for further evaluation and treatment. Your oral health is paramount, and timely intervention can prevent complications.
