Arthroscopic surgery
I have a sports injury and underwent surgery for meniscus repair, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and medial collateral ligament tightening.
Currently, it has been three weeks since the surgery.
I have noticed that when bending my knee, there is a sound that resembles a tight friction or a clicking noise just below the patella (it's hard to describe the exact sound).
I would like to know if this is normal.

Hello, it is not uncommon to experience joint stiffness and reduced mobility after surgery due to decreased activity.
It is recommended to engage in more heat therapy and rehabilitation exercises.
Most patients find relief within two to three months.

After undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, particularly for procedures such as meniscus repair, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and medial collateral ligament (MCL) tightening, it is not uncommon to experience unusual sounds and sensations in the knee joint during the early stages of recovery. The sounds you are describing, such as clicking or popping noises, can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process and the mechanics of the knee joint.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the knee joint is a complex structure composed of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and synovial fluid. After surgery, the joint may undergo changes as it heals, which can lead to various sounds. The clicking or popping noises you hear could be due to the movement of tendons or ligaments over bony prominences or other structures within the knee. This phenomenon is often referred to as "crepitus," and it can occur when there is a change in the position of the knee joint or when the joint surfaces are not perfectly aligned during movement.
Additionally, the presence of scar tissue or adhesions formed during the healing process can also contribute to these sounds. As the knee joint heals, the surrounding soft tissues may become tight or restricted, leading to friction and noise during movement. This is particularly common in the early weeks following surgery, as the body is still adjusting to the changes and the healing process is ongoing.
In your case, since you are three weeks post-surgery, it is quite normal to experience these sounds, especially if they are not accompanied by significant pain or swelling. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the sounds are associated with pain, instability, or swelling, it may indicate an underlying issue that requires further evaluation by your orthopedic surgeon.
Regarding your concern about the tightness and the "friction-like" sounds you are experiencing, it is advisable to continue with your rehabilitation exercises as directed by your physical therapist. Strengthening the muscles around the knee, particularly the quadriceps and hamstrings, can help improve joint stability and function, potentially reducing the sounds and sensations you are experiencing. Additionally, gentle stretching and mobility exercises can aid in alleviating tightness and improving the range of motion.
If you notice any worsening of symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or a feeling of instability in the knee, it is crucial to reach out to your healthcare provider for further assessment. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an MRI, to evaluate the status of the surgical site and ensure that there are no complications, such as a re-tear of the meniscus or issues with the reconstructed ligaments.
In summary, while it is common to hear unusual sounds in the knee following arthroscopic surgery, particularly in the early stages of recovery, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. Continue your rehabilitation program, and do not hesitate to communicate with your healthcare team about any concerns you may have. With time and proper care, many patients experience a significant reduction in these sounds and a return to normal function.
