Unexplained swelling and redness of the body?
Hello, doctor.
Last week, I developed a red bump on my finger that itches and hurts when scratched, resembling a mosquito bite, but the surface feels hard.
After a week, the redness and swelling are still present, and it continues to itch.
Additionally, I have developed another bump on the back of my hand, three on my arm, and two on my knee.
Initially, I thought these were insect bites, but I noticed that they have not faded and still itch.
I would like to inquire about what this condition might be.
Thank you.

Dermatological diagnoses require visual examination of the lesions or a detailed medical history, and cannot be adequately addressed through online consultations.
It is recommended that you seek a nearby dermatologist for evaluation and treatment.

The symptoms you are describing—persistent redness, swelling, and itching on your fingers, hands, arms, and knees—could be indicative of several dermatological conditions. Given that these lesions resemble insect bites but have not improved over time, it is essential to consider a few possible diagnoses.
1. Allergic Reactions: One possibility is that you are experiencing an allergic reaction to something you have come into contact with, such as a new soap, lotion, or even a fabric. Allergic contact dermatitis can present as red, itchy bumps that may resemble insect bites. If you suspect this, try to recall any new products you have used recently.
2. Urticaria (Hives): Another potential cause is urticaria, commonly known as hives. This condition can be triggered by various factors, including food, medications, or environmental allergens. Hives typically appear as raised, itchy welts and can vary in size. They may resolve and reappear in different locations, which can sometimes lead to confusion with insect bites.
3. Insect Bites: While you mentioned that you initially thought these were insect bites, it is worth noting that some insect bites can lead to prolonged reactions, especially if you have scratched them, leading to secondary irritation or infection.
4. Folliculitis: This condition occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to infection, irritation, or blockage. It can present as red, itchy bumps that may resemble pimples or insect bites.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Other skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, could also cause similar symptoms. Eczema often presents as itchy, red patches that can become crusty or scaly, while psoriasis typically appears as red patches covered with thick, silvery scales.
6. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections can also cause localized redness and swelling. For example, cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that can cause swelling, redness, and pain. If you notice increasing warmth, tenderness, or systemic symptoms like fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Given the persistence of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, conduct tests such as skin scrapings, allergy testing, or a biopsy to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to manage your symptoms:
- Avoid Scratching: Scratching can worsen the irritation and lead to secondary infections. Try to keep the affected areas clean and avoid further irritation.
- Cool Compresses: Applying a cool, damp cloth to the affected areas can help soothe itching and reduce inflammation.
- Over-the-Counter Antihistamines: If itching is bothersome, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine, which may help alleviate the itching and reduce any allergic response.
- Moisturizers: Keeping the skin moisturized can help if dryness is contributing to your symptoms. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer to avoid further irritation.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for your symptoms, a definitive diagnosis can only be made through a clinical evaluation by a healthcare professional. It is essential to seek medical advice, especially since the lesions have persisted for over a week without improvement.
