If a pregnancy test shows positive one day and negative the next, should I get a blood test?
Last month, my period started on December 21.
This week, I've been experiencing a sensation of something stuck in my throat and occasional mild stomach pain, along with lower back pain for 4-5 days.
Yesterday, January 7, I took a pregnancy test and saw a very faint second line, but this morning's urine test showed only one line, indicating a negative result.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? Thank you.

When faced with inconsistent pregnancy test results, it is indeed advisable to follow up with a blood test. Home pregnancy tests (HPTs) can sometimes yield false negatives or positives due to various factors, including the sensitivity of the test, the timing of the test in relation to your menstrual cycle, and the concentration of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine.
In your case, the presence of a faint second line on the pregnancy test could indicate a low level of hCG, which might suggest early pregnancy. However, the subsequent negative test result could imply that the hCG levels are not high enough to be detected reliably by the test. This inconsistency can be particularly common if the test is taken too early, as hCG levels typically double every 48 to 72 hours in early pregnancy.
Given your symptoms—such as a sensation of something in your throat, occasional stomach pain, and lower back pain—these could be related to various conditions, including early pregnancy, hormonal changes, or even premenstrual symptoms. However, they are not definitive indicators of pregnancy.
A blood test, specifically a quantitative beta-hCG test, can provide a more accurate measurement of hCG levels in your bloodstream. This test can confirm whether you are pregnant and help determine how far along you might be. If the hCG levels are low but rising, it could indicate a viable pregnancy. If the levels are falling, it may suggest a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, which is a medical emergency.
In addition to the blood test, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you continue to experience symptoms or if you have any concerns about your health. They may recommend an ultrasound to visualize the uterus and check for any signs of pregnancy or other conditions that could be causing your symptoms.
In summary, if you are experiencing inconsistent results from home pregnancy tests, a blood test is a prudent next step. It will provide clarity on your pregnancy status and help guide any necessary follow-up care. Always prioritize your health and seek professional medical advice when in doubt.
