How long does it take for a single wisdom tooth to stop growing after it has erupted?
The lower right wisdom tooth has emerged slightly (I can clearly feel it with my tongue and can see a small portion in the mirror), but the next day when I touch the same spot with my tongue, I can't feel the small portion I felt the day before.
After several months, I felt the wisdom tooth had emerged slightly again, but the next day there was only gum tissue left; I could only feel the gum with my tongue, and in the mirror, I could only see the gum, which appeared slightly white rather than pink.
This area of white gum tissue has persisted for several months.
I would like to know if this wisdom tooth has stopped growing or if it will continue to grow.

Hello: It is recommended to have regular X-ray imaging, as long-term objective imaging is more accurate than relying solely on subjective sensations from tongue examination.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically begin to emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. The growth and eruption of wisdom teeth can vary significantly from person to person. In your case, it sounds like you are experiencing intermittent growth of the wisdom tooth, which can be quite common.
When a wisdom tooth first begins to emerge, it may only partially break through the gum line, leading to the sensation of a small corner of the tooth being present. This is often accompanied by swelling or irritation of the surrounding gum tissue. The fact that you are feeling a small corner one day and then not the next could indicate that the tooth is still in the process of erupting, or it may be that the tooth is not fully erupting due to various factors such as lack of space in the jaw, the angle of the tooth, or the presence of gum tissue covering it.
The white area you are noticing around the gum tissue could be a sign of inflammation or irritation, which is not uncommon when wisdom teeth are coming in. This tissue can sometimes appear white due to the presence of keratin or dead cells, and it may also indicate that the area is not healing properly, especially if there is pressure from the tooth trying to erupt.
As for whether your wisdom tooth has stopped growing or will continue to grow, it is difficult to provide a definitive answer without a clinical examination. Generally, if a wisdom tooth is partially erupted and remains in that state for an extended period, it may be due to the aforementioned factors preventing it from fully emerging. In some cases, wisdom teeth can become impacted, meaning they are unable to fully erupt due to blockage by other teeth or insufficient space in the jaw.
If you are concerned about the growth of your wisdom tooth or the condition of your gums, it is advisable to consult with a dentist or oral surgeon. They can perform an examination and possibly take X-rays to assess the position of the tooth and determine if any treatment is necessary. Treatment options may include monitoring the tooth, performing a minor surgical procedure to remove the tooth if it is impacted, or addressing any gum issues that may be present.
In summary, the growth of wisdom teeth can be unpredictable, and it is not uncommon for them to take time to fully emerge. If you notice persistent discomfort, swelling, or changes in the gum tissue, seeking professional dental advice is the best course of action to ensure your oral health is maintained.
