Postoperative issues after hernia surgery?
I just had inguinal hernia surgery the day before yesterday, and today is the third day.
After urinating, I noticed a small amount of blood when wiping (very minimal).
What could be the reason for this? There was no such issue on the day of the surgery or the second day.
Additionally, I am taking oral contraceptives; could this be related? I would appreciate your help in answering this.
Thank you very much.

Dr. Chen Bingze reply Surgery
This is likely not related to the hernia surgery; it may be more associated with the contraceptive pills taken beforehand.
If there is still bleeding, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist for further evaluation.

After undergoing inguinal hernia surgery, noticing a small amount of blood in your urine can understandably cause concern. There are several potential reasons for this occurrence, and it’s essential to consider them in the context of your recent surgery and overall health.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that surgical procedures, including inguinal hernia repairs, can sometimes lead to temporary changes in urinary function. The surgery itself may have caused some irritation or trauma to the urinary tract, particularly if the surgical site was close to the bladder or urethra. This irritation can result in minor bleeding, which may manifest as blood in the urine (hematuria). Given that you did not notice any blood on the first or second day post-surgery, it’s possible that this bleeding is a delayed response to the surgical manipulation or positioning during the procedure.
Another consideration is the use of hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills. While these medications are primarily used to prevent pregnancy, they can also affect the menstrual cycle and overall hormonal balance. In some cases, hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in the urinary tract, including increased susceptibility to urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can cause hematuria. If you have experienced any other symptoms, such as burning during urination, increased frequency of urination, or lower abdominal pain, it may be worth considering a UTI as a potential cause.
In addition, it’s essential to consider other factors that could contribute to blood in the urine. For instance, dehydration can concentrate urine and potentially irritate the bladder, leading to minor bleeding. If you have been less active or have not been drinking enough fluids post-surgery, this could be a contributing factor.
While a small amount of blood in the urine can sometimes be benign, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If the bleeding persists, increases in volume, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as pain, fever, or changes in urination patterns), it is advisable to contact your healthcare provider promptly. They may recommend further evaluation, such as a urinalysis or imaging studies, to rule out any complications related to the surgery or other underlying conditions.
In summary, while the presence of a small amount of blood in your urine after inguinal hernia surgery can be attributed to several benign causes, it is essential to remain vigilant. Keep track of any additional symptoms and do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide a thorough assessment and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and open communication with your medical team is key to a smooth recovery.
