Frontal bone pain
In the past year or two, I have started experiencing pain in my brow bone, which I initially thought might be due to the use of electronic devices.
As a result, I significantly reduced my usage of these devices for a while.
I also visited the ophthalmology department at Guangtian Shalu Hospital for a consultation.
After a series of examinations, the doctor indicated that there were no significant issues and prescribed pain relievers and mydriatic agents to be taken three times a day and before bedtime.
However, the brow bone pain persists.
Regarding my sleep patterns, I do not typically have insomnia issues.
I usually fall asleep before midnight and wake up around 8 AM, averaging about 6-8 hours of sleep each night without any insomnia.
Currently, I work as a multi-purpose taxi driver, with working hours of about 8-10 hours a day (from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM) and 10-12 hours on weekends (from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM).
In terms of my medical history, I was diagnosed with asthma in childhood (without medication).
In February 2023, I experienced a recurrence of asthma and visited Wuchi Children's Hospital, where I was prescribed a dry powder inhaler.
My condition is now under control, so I do not take medication regularly and only use it as needed.
Currently, I have a severe allergic constitution.
I experience severe sneezing (at least five times in a row) when there are changes in temperature or poor air quality, and I often need to blow my nose (approximately 1-2 times per hour).
Recently, the frequency of my brow bone pain has increased significantly.
Each episode is unilateral, and during these episodes, the same side of my eye experiences severe pain and swelling, making it difficult to open.
Hot compresses and adequate rest have not improved the situation.
I would like to ask the doctor which specialty I should consult if the pain continues.

Dr. Cai Zongzhang reply Neurology
Hello, Ms.
Chang: The pain occurring in the brow area may have other potential causes, including sinusitis or trigeminal neuralgia.
If the ophthalmic examination shows no abnormalities, it is recommended to consult an otolaryngologist and a neurologist for further evaluation.

More Info
Understanding eyebrow bone pain can be quite complex, especially when it is accompanied by other symptoms such as eye pain and discomfort. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing persistent pain in the eyebrow area for the past couple of years, which has not improved despite reducing your screen time and seeking medical attention.
Potential Causes of Eyebrow Bone Pain
1. Sinusitis: Given your history of allergies and frequent sneezing, it is possible that you may be experiencing sinusitis. The sinuses are located near the eyebrow area, and inflammation or infection can lead to pain in that region. Symptoms often include facial pain, nasal congestion, and sometimes fever.
2. Tension Headaches: As a taxi driver, you likely spend long hours in a fixed position, which can lead to muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. This tension can radiate to the forehead and eyebrow area, causing pain.
3. Eye Strain: Prolonged use of screens can lead to digital eye strain, which may manifest as discomfort around the eyes and forehead. Symptoms can include dryness, blurred vision, and headaches.
4. Neurological Issues: In some cases, eyebrow bone pain can be related to nerve issues, such as trigeminal neuralgia, which can cause sharp, shooting pain in the face.
5. Other Conditions: Conditions such as migraines, cluster headaches, or even dental issues (like sinus pressure from dental infections) can also cause pain in the eyebrow area.
When to Seek Help
Given that your pain is persistent and has not improved with over-the-counter medications, it is advisable to seek further medical evaluation. Here are some recommendations on when and where to seek help:
1. Otolaryngologist (ENT Specialist): Since your symptoms may be related to sinus issues, an ENT specialist can evaluate for sinusitis or other nasal problems. They may perform imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to assess the sinuses.
2. Neurologist: If your symptoms suggest a neurological issue, such as severe headaches or facial pain, a neurologist can provide a thorough evaluation and may recommend treatments specific to headache disorders.
3. Ophthalmologist: If you continue to experience eye pain or discomfort, an ophthalmologist can assess for any underlying eye conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.
4. Primary Care Physician: Your primary care doctor can help coordinate care and refer you to specialists as needed. They can also evaluate your overall health and any other underlying conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Self-Care and Management
While waiting for your appointment, consider the following self-care strategies:
- Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the affected area may help alleviate pain and reduce muscle tension.
- Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate headaches and discomfort.
- Rest: Take regular breaks from driving and screen time to reduce eye strain and muscle tension.
- Allergy Management: Continue to manage your allergies, as they may be contributing to your symptoms. Consider discussing allergy medications with your doctor.
Conclusion
Persistent eyebrow bone pain, especially when accompanied by eye discomfort, warrants further investigation. It is essential to seek help from the appropriate specialists to determine the underlying cause and receive targeted treatment. Your symptoms may be multifactorial, and a comprehensive approach will likely yield the best results. Remember to keep track of your symptoms, including their frequency and intensity, as this information will be valuable for your healthcare provider.
