Pregnancy test questions?

Hello doctor, I had unprotected intercourse on January 1st (11 days after my menstrual period, with a cycle of 46 days).
The intercourse lasted less than a minute, and I used a condom without ejaculation.
I took emergency contraception within 24 hours.
A week later, I experienced bleeding for five days.
I had a blood pregnancy test on days 12, 17, and 21, and urine pregnancy tests on days 23 and 28 (not first morning urine), all of which were negative.
Today, I visited a gynecologist for an ultrasound, which showed no abnormalities, and I also had another urine test (29 days after intercourse).
Can I rule out the possibility of pregnancy, or should I wait another week to test again?

Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/01/30

More Info

Based on your detailed description, it appears that you have taken several steps to rule out pregnancy after your unprotected sexual encounter. You mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse on January 1st, followed by the use of emergency contraception within 24 hours. You experienced bleeding for five days a week after the encounter, which could be a withdrawal bleed from the emergency contraception. Additionally, you have conducted multiple pregnancy tests (both blood and urine) over the following weeks, all of which returned negative results. You also underwent an ultrasound examination, which showed no abnormalities.

Given this information, it is reasonable to conclude that the likelihood of pregnancy is very low. The emergency contraceptive pill is highly effective when taken as directed, especially within the recommended time frame after unprotected intercourse. The bleeding you experienced could be attributed to the hormonal changes induced by the emergency contraception rather than a sign of pregnancy.

In general, pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Blood tests can detect lower levels of hCG than urine tests, but both types of tests are quite reliable when conducted at the appropriate time. Since you have tested negative multiple times and had an ultrasound that did not indicate any signs of pregnancy, it is unlikely that you are pregnant.

However, if you are still experiencing symptoms that concern you or if your menstrual cycle remains irregular, it may be wise to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide additional insights into your menstrual cycle and any underlying issues that may be affecting it.
It is also important to note that if you continue to have doubts or if your symptoms change, you might consider waiting a week and then taking another pregnancy test, preferably using first-morning urine for the most accurate result. If you still have negative results and your period does not arrive, further investigation by a healthcare professional may be warranted to explore other potential causes for your symptoms.

In summary, based on the information provided, it seems you can reasonably rule out pregnancy at this point. However, if you have ongoing concerns or symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and care.
