After getting up and rinsing my mouth, my right ear feels clogged?

Hello, Doctor! After I wake up and rinse my mouth, I feel a stuffy sensation in my right ear, similar to nasal congestion, but I don't have a cold or any nasal discharge.
I usually sleep on my side, and my right ear has been pressed against the pillow for a long time; I fell asleep like that last night as well.
When I woke up this morning, I felt fine, but after rinsing my mouth, I noticed a stuffy feeling in my ear, almost like there is water trapped inside.
I can feel the vibrations when I speak, and even when I yawn, drink water, or bend over to my knees, the stuffiness persists.
My hearing seems completely normal, as I can still hear phone calls clearly.
Should I go see a doctor directly, or is it better to wait two or three days to see if the ear condition improves? Thank you, Doctor!

If the feeling of fullness persists, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngology clinic for evaluation and examination as soon as possible.

More Info

When you experience a sensation of ear blockage after rinsing your mouth, it can be attributed to a few physiological factors, primarily involving the Eustachian tube and the pressure balance in your ear. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and plays a crucial role in equalizing ear pressure and draining fluid.
In your case, the sensation of blockage in your right ear after rinsing your mouth could be due to several reasons:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: This is the most common reason for experiencing a sensation of fullness or blockage in the ear. The Eustachian tube can become temporarily dysfunctional due to changes in pressure, which can happen when you rinse your mouth vigorously. The act of rinsing can create pressure changes in the oral cavity that may affect the Eustachian tube's ability to open and equalize pressure in the middle ear.

2. Positioning: Since you mentioned that you sleep on your side with your right ear pressed against the pillow, this could contribute to a feeling of blockage. Pressure on the ear can affect the Eustachian tube's function, leading to a sensation of fullness or discomfort.
3. Fluid Accumulation: Sometimes, fluid can accumulate in the middle ear, especially if there has been any recent upper respiratory infection or allergy, even if you are not currently experiencing symptoms. This fluid can create a sensation of blockage.

4. Jaw Movement: The act of rinsing your mouth often involves some jaw movement, which can also affect the Eustachian tube. If the tube is already slightly dysfunctional, this movement can exacerbate the sensation of blockage.

5. Sinus Pressure: Although you mentioned not having a cold or nasal congestion, sinus pressure can still affect the Eustachian tube. If there is any mild sinus congestion, it can lead to a feeling of fullness in the ear.

Given that your hearing remains normal and you can still hear phone calls clearly, it is a positive sign that there is likely no severe underlying issue. However, if the sensation persists for more than a few days, or if you begin to experience pain, significant hearing loss, or other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist.
In the meantime, here are some self-care measures you can try to alleviate the sensation of blockage:
- Yawning or Swallowing: These actions can help open the Eustachian tube and equalize pressure in the ear.

- Valsalva Maneuver: Gently pinch your nose, close your mouth, and try to exhale gently. This can help to equalize the pressure in your ears.

- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear may help relieve discomfort and promote drainage.

- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin mucus and promote better Eustachian tube function.

If these measures do not provide relief, or if you notice any worsening of symptoms, seeking medical attention is recommended. An ENT specialist can perform a thorough examination and determine if there is any underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
