Having sexual intercourse with a condom after taking emergency contraceptive pills?
Hello, I would like to inquire about my menstrual cycle.
It was from February 7 to February 11, and I had sexual intercourse on February 15, during which there was an accidental ejaculation.
I took the emergency contraceptive pill (Ella) about an hour later.
On February 16, I had sexual intercourse again (with a condom).
What is the likelihood of successful contraception in this situation? Additionally, I would like to know if the emergency contraceptive pill has any effects on uterine fibroids.
Thank you for your help!
Kai Kai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/02/16

Hello, the effectiveness of emergency contraception is not 100%, with a failure rate of about 3%.
The likelihood of affecting fibroids is minimal.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), such as the one you mentioned (安立婷, which contains Levonorgestrel), are designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, such as a condom breaking or slipping. The effectiveness of ECPs is highest when taken as soon as possible after the incident, ideally within 72 hours, but they can work up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, with decreasing efficacy over time.
In your case, since you took the emergency contraceptive pill approximately one hour after unprotected intercourse, you maximized your chances of preventing pregnancy. The subsequent sexual encounter on February 16, where a condom was used, further reduces the likelihood of pregnancy. Condoms, when used correctly, are an effective form of contraception, with a typical use failure rate of about 13% per year. Therefore, if the condom did not break or slip during the second encounter, the chances of pregnancy are quite low.
Regarding your concern about whether emergency contraceptive pills can affect uterine fibroids (子宮肌瘤), the current medical consensus indicates that ECPs do not have a direct impact on fibroids. Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus, and while hormonal fluctuations can influence their growth, the use of emergency contraceptive pills is not known to exacerbate or shrink fibroids significantly. However, if you have existing fibroids, it is always a good idea to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider, especially if you experience unusual symptoms after taking medication.
In summary, based on the information provided, your chances of successful contraception after using the emergency contraceptive pill and a condom are high. Additionally, ECPs should not negatively affect uterine fibroids, but ongoing monitoring and consultation with a healthcare provider are advisable for any concerns related to fibroids or other reproductive health issues. Always remember to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and to address any specific health concerns you may have.
