Retinal laser treatment

Hello, Doctor.

1.
I underwent a scleral buckle procedure on my left eye on December 22 of last year, and this morning I had a postoperative laser treatment.
I would like to know why laser treatment is needed after surgery (the doctor during my follow-up visit mentioned that my retina is attached).
Is it for reinforcement purposes?
2.
Additionally, when I look slightly upward with my left eye, I sometimes feel a small area in the upper left part of my visual field vibrating slightly.
At times it is noticeable, and other times it is less so, but it doesn't seem to last continuously.
Is this a side effect of the laser treatment? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: 1.
Typically, postoperative laser treatment may be performed to enhance the effects of the surgery.
This helps ensure that the surgical outcome is optimized.
2.
Regarding the slight vibration sensation you described when looking slightly upward with your left eye, this may be due to physiological responses following the surgery or laser treatment, or it could be a temporary adaptation phenomenon.
This sensation may occur during the recovery process but usually improves gradually.

Hello! Thank you for your questions regarding post-surgery laser treatment for retinal issues. It's great that you're seeking clarity on your situation, as understanding your treatment and recovery process is crucial for your overall eye health.

1. Why is laser treatment needed after scleral buckle surgery?
Scleral buckle surgery is performed to treat retinal detachment by placing a silicone band around the eye to help the retina reattach. While this procedure can be effective, it does not always guarantee that the retina will remain attached permanently. Post-operative laser treatment, often referred to as laser photocoagulation, is typically used to reinforce the attachment of the retina. This laser treatment creates small burns in the retina, which promote scar tissue formation that helps to secure the retina in place. Even if your doctor has indicated that your retina is currently attached, the laser treatment serves as a precautionary measure to prevent future detachments and to ensure that the healing process is robust. It’s a common practice to enhance the stability of the retina after such surgeries.

2. What about the sensation of vibration in your visual field?
Experiencing a sensation of vibration or flickering in your visual field after laser treatment can be concerning. However, it is not uncommon for patients to report various visual disturbances following retinal surgery or laser treatment. These sensations may be due to several factors, including the healing process of the retina, changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye, or even the effects of the laser itself. In many cases, these symptoms can diminish over time as your eye heals. However, if the sensation persists or worsens, it is essential to follow up with your ophthalmologist. They can perform a thorough examination to rule out any complications, such as changes in the retina or issues with the vitreous body.

Additional Considerations
It's important to maintain regular follow-up appointments with your eye care provider after any retinal surgery. They will monitor your recovery and address any concerns you may have. If you notice any new symptoms, such as an increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a significant change in vision, you should contact your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of complications.

In summary, the need for additional laser treatment after scleral buckle surgery is a common and proactive approach to ensure the long-term success of the procedure. The sensations you are experiencing may be part of the normal healing process, but keeping an open line of communication with your healthcare provider is key to addressing any concerns and ensuring the best possible outcome for your vision. Always prioritize your follow-up care, and don't hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you may have about your recovery.
