Can individuals with gastroenteritis consume plain noodles, udon noodles, or vermicelli?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask if it's okay to eat plain noodles, udon noodles (like the soup udon from Marugame), or rice vermicelli when I have gastroenteritis? My symptoms include occasional stomach pain and diarrhea after eating, but they have persisted for over two weeks.
Recently, I've only been eating porridge or energy gels to fill my stomach, and I'm wondering if I can change things up and eat some noodles.

Symptom improvement/no longer experiencing diarrhea allows for a diet of soft foods, but it is advisable to avoid overly greasy items.
It is also recommended to take medication 20 minutes prior to eating.

When dealing with gastroenteritis, dietary choices can significantly impact recovery and symptom management. Gastroenteritis, commonly known as stomach flu, is characterized by inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and sometimes fever. Given your symptoms of occasional stomach pain and diarrhea after eating, it is essential to approach your diet with caution.

In general, when recovering from gastroenteritis, it is advisable to follow a bland diet that is easy on the stomach. Foods that are low in fat and fiber, and easy to digest, are typically recommended. Noodles, such as Yangchun noodles, Udon, and Dongfen (glass noodles), can be suitable options, provided they are prepared in a way that does not exacerbate your symptoms.

1. Yangchun Noodles: These are typically made from wheat flour and are soft and easy to digest. If you choose to eat Yangchun noodles, it is best to have them in a light broth without heavy seasonings or spices. Avoid adding any oily or rich sauces, as these can irritate your stomach further.

2. Udon Noodles: Udon noodles are also soft and chewy, making them easy to digest. Similar to Yangchun noodles, they should be consumed in a simple broth. If you are considering a dish like the soup Udon from Marugame Seimen, opt for a clear broth and avoid any toppings that are spicy or greasy.

3. Dongfen (Glass Noodles): These noodles are made from mung bean starch and are generally well-tolerated. They can be a good option as they are light and easy to digest. Again, ensure they are prepared in a simple manner, avoiding heavy sauces or spices.

While these noodle options can be included in your diet, it is crucial to listen to your body. If you notice that consuming these foods leads to increased stomach pain or diarrhea, it may be best to revert to a more bland diet until your symptoms improve.
Additionally, since you have been experiencing symptoms for over two weeks, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional if you have not already done so. Prolonged symptoms can indicate a need for further evaluation to rule out any underlying conditions or complications.

In summary, you can eat Yangchun noodles, Udon, or Dongfen while managing gastroenteritis, but ensure they are prepared simply and avoid any heavy or spicy additions. Always prioritize hydration and consider incorporating other bland foods such as rice, bananas, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet) as you recover. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is essential for proper management and care.
