The feeling of facial bone screws makes me wonder if I'm not normal?
Hello! A few days ago, I sustained multiple fractures in a car accident.
My current concern is regarding the fractures in my face, where I have metal plates and screws in my right cheek.
After having the stitches removed from my face the day before yesterday, I noticed that whenever I smile, I can feel the movement of the materials inside my face, particularly around the zygomatic area.
However, when my face is at rest, the internal structures return to their original position very slowly.
This sensation is somewhat psychologically unsettling for me.
Additionally, when I touch my cheek, I can clearly feel some bumps.
I'm unsure if this is normal or if it will improve over time, so I would like to ask the doctor for advice.
Thank you, doctor! I apologize for the severity of my first injury; I have a lot of concerns.

Hello, the likelihood of healing after facial bone fractures is very high following surgery, so there is no need to worry.
Any discomfort in the short term after the surgery will also improve quickly.
Please be patient, thank you.

It’s completely understandable to feel anxious and concerned after experiencing such a significant injury, especially one involving facial bones. Recovering from facial surgery, particularly after a traumatic event like a car accident, can be a complex process, and it’s normal to have questions about what to expect during your recovery.
After surgery to repair facial fractures, such as those involving the cheekbone (zygomatic bone), it is common to experience a range of sensations and discomfort. The feeling of movement or shifting when you smile is not unusual. This sensation can occur because the bone plates and screws used to stabilize the fractures may not feel completely integrated into your body yet. The healing process involves not only the bones but also the surrounding soft tissues, nerves, and muscles, which can take time to adjust to the new anatomical configuration.
When you smile, the muscles in your face contract, which can cause the plates and screws to shift slightly, leading to the sensation you’re experiencing. The fact that these sensations diminish when your face is at rest is also a good sign, indicating that your body is beginning to adapt to the changes. However, the slow return to a resting position can be concerning, but it is often part of the healing process.
The presence of a noticeable bump or irregularity under the skin where the plates are located is also common. As your body heals, the soft tissue will gradually adjust, and the contours of your face may improve over time. It’s important to give your body the necessary time to heal, which can take several weeks to months, depending on the severity of the fractures and the type of surgical intervention performed.
In terms of your recovery, here are some important points to consider:
1. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-ups with your surgeon are crucial. They can monitor your healing progress and address any concerns you may have. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or signs of infection, be sure to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
2. Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous activities or movements that could strain your facial muscles or disrupt the healing process. Gentle facial exercises, as recommended by your doctor, may help improve mobility and reduce stiffness.
3. Pain Management: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief medications may be helpful, but always consult your doctor before taking any medication.
4. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, can support bone healing. Staying hydrated is also essential.
5. Emotional Support: It’s normal to feel a range of emotions during recovery. Consider talking to friends, family, or a mental health professional if you’re feeling particularly anxious or overwhelmed.
6. Scar Management: If you have visible scars from the surgery, discuss with your doctor about scar management options, such as silicone gel sheets or topical treatments, which may help improve the appearance of scars over time.
In summary, while the sensations and irregularities you are experiencing can be concerning, they are often part of the normal recovery process after facial surgery. Patience is key, as healing takes time. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that your recovery is on track and to address any concerns you may have. Your body is working hard to heal, and with time, you should see improvements in both function and appearance.
