Dryness of the glans with a wrinkled appearance?

Hello doctor, my glans is covered with straight wrinkles when not erect, and when erect, the wrinkles stretch out into white lines.
It has been very dry both before and after erection, feeling almost like it's about to peel, but I haven't noticed any obvious flaking.
There is no itching or pain, and this condition has been present for a long time.
Is this a medical issue? If not, what kind of skincare products can I use? I have taken a photo of my glans; if possible, please take a look.
Thank you.

Che Xiansheng, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/02/23

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology

Hello Mr.
Che: You don't need to be nervous or use any skincare products; generally, there should be no issues.
Just maintain cleanliness.
When washing the genital area, "do not" use excessive body wash, as this may worsen your symptoms.
If you have any concerns, it is advisable to seek medical attention.

More Info

Understanding dryness and wrinkles on the glans, or the head of the penis, can be concerning for many individuals. The symptoms you describe—wrinkles that become more pronounced when erect, persistent dryness, and a sensation of tightness—can be attributed to several factors, and it's important to approach this with a comprehensive understanding.

Causes of Dryness and Wrinkles on the Glans
1. Natural Anatomy: The glans has a unique structure that can appear wrinkled, especially when not erect. The skin on the glans is thinner and more delicate than other areas, which can contribute to the appearance of wrinkles.
2. Dry Skin: Dryness can be caused by a lack of moisture in the skin. This can be due to environmental factors, such as low humidity, or personal habits, such as excessive washing with harsh soaps that strip natural oils.

3. Friction and Irritation: Activities such as masturbation or sexual intercourse can lead to temporary irritation and dryness. If lubrication is not used, friction can exacerbate the issue.

4. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis can lead to dryness and changes in skin texture. However, since you mentioned there is no itching or pain, these conditions may be less likely.

5. Infections: While you have not reported any pain or discomfort, it's important to consider that certain infections (like yeast infections) can cause changes in the skin's appearance.
6. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can also affect skin hydration and elasticity, although this is less common in younger individuals.

Is It a Disease?
Based on your description, it does not appear to be a disease, especially since you are not experiencing pain, itching, or peeling. However, persistent dryness and changes in skin texture warrant attention. It is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination to rule out any underlying conditions.

Care and Treatment Options
1. Moisturizers: Using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help alleviate dryness. Look for products specifically designed for sensitive skin. Options include:
- Coconut Oil: A natural moisturizer that can provide hydration.

- Aloe Vera Gel: Known for its soothing properties, it can help with dryness.

- Vitamin E Oil: This can be beneficial for skin health and hydration.

2. Gentle Cleansing: Avoid harsh soaps and opt for mild, unscented cleansers. Over-washing can strip the skin of its natural oils.

3. Lubrication: If engaging in sexual activity or masturbation, consider using a water-based lubricant to reduce friction and prevent dryness.

4. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water, as overall hydration can impact skin health.

5. Avoid Irritants: Be cautious with products that may irritate the skin, such as scented lotions or soaps.

When to Seek Medical Advice
If the dryness persists despite self-care measures, or if you notice any changes such as redness, swelling, or the development of sores, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, recommend treatments or further investigations.

In conclusion, while the symptoms you describe do not seem to indicate a serious condition, proper care and attention to skin health are important. Using appropriate moisturizers and gentle cleansing methods can significantly improve the condition of the skin on the glans. Always prioritize consulting with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options.
