Antihistamine Side Effects: Nausea and Long-term Use Concerns - Otolaryngology

Antihistamine medications side effects?

Hello, doctor.
This afternoon, after taking a 60 mg Ailai tablet, I started to feel a bit of a headache and nausea about two hours later after eating (I eventually vomited).
I have taken quite a few Allergan coated tablets and Xylo extended-release microcapsules before without feeling nauseous; only the Allergan coated tablets made me a bit sleepy.
I would like to ask if this could be a side effect of Ailai? How can I confirm this? Also, I have chronic nasal allergies, and sometimes I experience excessive runny nose.
During those times, I take one Xylo extended-release microcapsule.
Will taking it long-term put a burden on my body?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/02/25

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Common allergic reactions include swelling around the eyes and lips, or skin rashes, which are generally less indicative of side effects caused by medication.
When experiencing allergies, the use of Hydroxyzine extended-release microcapsules is typically safe, provided that liver and kidney functions are normal and the appropriate dosage is used as prescribed.

Antihistamines, such as the one you mentioned (艾來, or Ailai), are commonly used to treat allergic reactions, including symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, and itching. However, they can also have side effects, which can vary depending on the specific medication and the individual taking it.
In your case, after taking Ailai (60 mg), you experienced nausea and a headache, which can indeed be side effects of antihistamines. While not everyone will experience these side effects, they are not uncommon. Antihistamines can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting. The likelihood of experiencing side effects can depend on factors such as dosage, individual sensitivity to the medication, and whether the drug is taken with food or other substances.

To confirm whether your symptoms are related to Ailai, consider the following steps:
1. Timing of Symptoms: Note the timing of your symptoms in relation to when you took the medication. If the nausea and headache occurred shortly after taking Ailai, it is likely related to the medication.

2. Dosage and Administration: Ensure you are taking the correct dosage as prescribed. Taking higher doses than recommended can increase the risk of side effects.

3. Food Interactions: Sometimes, taking medication on an empty stomach or immediately after eating can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort. If you took Ailai after eating, it might have contributed to your nausea.

4. Consult Your Doctor: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider. They may recommend an alternative antihistamine that may be less likely to cause nausea or other side effects.

Regarding your concern about long-term use of antihistamines, such as 喜洛緩釋微粒膠囊 (likely a reference to a specific formulation of antihistamine), chronic use can lead to several considerations:
1. Tolerance: Over time, your body may become tolerant to the effects of antihistamines, meaning you may need to take higher doses to achieve the same relief from symptoms.

2. Side Effects: Long-term use can increase the risk of side effects, including sedation, dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention. In some cases, prolonged use of certain antihistamines has been associated with cognitive decline, particularly in older adults.

3. Underlying Conditions: If you find yourself needing to take antihistamines frequently for nasal allergies, it may be worth discussing with your doctor whether there are other treatment options available, such as nasal corticosteroids, which can be effective for managing allergy symptoms without some of the side effects associated with antihistamines.

4. Lifestyle and Environmental Changes: In addition to medication, consider lifestyle changes or environmental modifications that may help reduce your allergy symptoms, such as using air purifiers, avoiding allergens, and maintaining a clean living space.

In summary, while antihistamines can be effective for managing allergy symptoms, they can also cause side effects, including nausea and headaches. If you experience these symptoms, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for guidance on managing your allergies and to discuss the long-term use of antihistamines. They can help you find the most appropriate treatment plan tailored to your needs, ensuring both efficacy and safety.
