Abnormal symptoms after illness?

Hello doctor, a few days ago I had a fever, and after recovering, I noticed some unusual symptoms that I don't typically experience: 1.
My eye pressure sometimes suddenly spikes.
2.
I have been experiencing unexplained sores in my mouth, and I have been paying attention to staying hydrated these past few days.
3.
When I blow my nose or drink something, I inexplicably smell a nutty odor.
I would like to ask the doctor what might be going on.
Thank you.

Dear Canned Cat,
You mentioned in your letter that after recovering from a fever, you are experiencing symptoms such as occasional elevated intraocular pressure, mouth sores, and a distorted sense of smell.
Due to the various possibilities, I recommend that you visit a general internal medicine or family medicine clinic for further evaluation.
This will help determine the underlying issues and how to address them.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the unusual symptoms you've experienced after recovering from a fever. It's understandable to feel anxious when your body exhibits new or unexpected sensations, especially after an illness. Let's break down the symptoms you've mentioned and explore potential underlying causes, as well as recommendations for managing these sensations.

1. Sudden High Eye Pressure: Experiencing fluctuations in eye pressure can be concerning. This symptom may be related to several factors, including dehydration, which can occur during an illness, or it could be a response to stress or anxiety. In some cases, infections or inflammation can lead to increased intraocular pressure. It's important to monitor this symptom closely. If you experience pain, vision changes, or if the sensation persists, I recommend consulting an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) for a thorough examination. They can measure your eye pressure and rule out conditions such as glaucoma or other ocular issues.

2. Mouth Sores: The appearance of sores in the mouth can be attributed to various factors, including viral infections, dehydration, or even nutritional deficiencies. After an illness, your immune system may be temporarily weakened, making you more susceptible to infections like herpes simplex virus, which can cause cold sores. Additionally, if you're not consuming a balanced diet or if you're dehydrated, this could lead to mouth ulcers. Ensuring adequate hydration and nutrition is crucial. If the sores persist or worsen, consider visiting a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment options.

3. Unusual Smells or Tastes: The sensation of smelling or tasting something unusual, such as the scent of nuts when blowing your nose or drinking, can be linked to a phenomenon known as "phantosmia" (smelling things that aren't there) or "dysgeusia" (altered taste perception). These symptoms can occur after respiratory infections, including viral illnesses, as they may affect the olfactory and gustatory systems. This could be due to inflammation or damage to the sensory nerves involved in smell and taste. If this sensation continues or is bothersome, it may be beneficial to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for further assessment.

Recommendations:
- Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of fluids, as hydration is essential for recovery and can help alleviate some symptoms.

- Balanced Diet: Ensure you are consuming a well-rounded diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support your immune system and overall health.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a journal of your symptoms, noting when they occur and any potential triggers. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

- Consult Healthcare Providers: If your symptoms persist or worsen, don't hesitate to seek medical advice. A thorough evaluation can help identify any underlying issues and guide appropriate treatment.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be concerning, they could be temporary responses to your recent illness. However, it's essential to remain vigilant and proactive about your health. If you have any further questions or if your symptoms change, please reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and care. Take care!
