Pain in the ear associated with swelling of the lymph nodes in the posterior neck?
Hello Doctor, I am currently 13 weeks pregnant and have been diagnosed with a miscarriage.
On the fourth day of the miscarriage, I started experiencing pain in my left ear, and it hurts when I apply pressure to the ear bone.
There is also slight swelling, and a small lymph node in the back of my neck is swollen and painful as well.
Should I immediately go to the hospital to inform the doctor about this situation? It is affecting my ability to eat and chew, causing significant discomfort, and I am now hesitant to bite into anything.

Hello, infections can cause lymphadenopathy.
If there is a persistent high fever or if the lymph nodes continue to enlarge and the pain worsens, it is recommended to return for an earlier evaluation.

It sounds like you're experiencing a concerning combination of symptoms during your pregnancy, specifically ear pain and swollen lymph nodes, alongside a recent diagnosis of A-Flow (likely referring to an A-type influenza infection). Given your condition, it's essential to address these symptoms carefully.
Firstly, ear pain can arise from several causes, especially in the context of a viral infection like influenza. The inflammation caused by the virus can lead to fluid accumulation in the middle ear, resulting in conditions such as otitis media (middle ear infection). This can cause pain, pressure, and sometimes even hearing changes. Additionally, the swollen lymph nodes in your neck indicate that your body is responding to an infection, which is common during viral illnesses.
The fact that you are experiencing pain when pressing on the ear bone suggests that there may be inflammation or infection in the ear itself. The lymph nodes swelling in the neck can be a sign that your body is fighting off the infection, but it can also indicate that the infection has spread or that there is a secondary infection present.
Given that you are pregnant, it is crucial to be cautious. The immune system undergoes changes during pregnancy, which can sometimes make pregnant individuals more susceptible to infections. Moreover, certain medications and treatments may not be safe during pregnancy, so it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider who can provide guidance tailored to your situation.
Here are some recommendations:
1. Seek Medical Attention: It is advisable to contact your healthcare provider or visit a clinic as soon as possible. Given your symptoms, they may want to assess you for potential ear infections or other complications related to your influenza diagnosis. They can also evaluate the swollen lymph nodes to rule out any serious conditions.
2. Pain Management: In the meantime, if you are experiencing significant discomfort, you can consider using warm compresses on the affected ear to help alleviate pain. However, avoid any over-the-counter medications without consulting your doctor first, as some may not be safe during pregnancy.
3. Hydration and Rest: Ensure you stay well-hydrated and get plenty of rest. This will help your body recover from the influenza infection and may also help your immune system fight off any secondary infections.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you notice any worsening of your ear pain, increased swelling of the lymph nodes, fever, or any new symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
5. Dietary Considerations: Since you mentioned difficulty eating, try to consume soft foods that are easier to chew and swallow. Staying nourished is important for both your health and the health of your baby.
In summary, while ear pain and swollen lymph nodes can be common during viral infections, your pregnancy adds a layer of complexity that necessitates prompt medical evaluation. Do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and receive appropriate care. Your health and the health of your baby are of utmost importance.
