Can I take antipyretics after taking antibiotics?

Suspected prostatitis, and the urine report will not be available until next week.
The doctor has prescribed medications for prostatitis (Suplem, Tamsulosin, and Potassium Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory).
After taking the medication, my temperature is still at 39.5 degrees Celsius three hours later.
Is it safe to take regular acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce the fever? Could it cause urinary retention issues? (I am unable to contact a hospital in Taiwan due to the time difference, so I am asking online.
Thank you in advance.)

Hello: It is usable, but you should also drink plenty of water and avoid spicy and irritating foods and beverages.
If the prostate is inflamed, treatment usually takes some time; it typically does not resolve completely all at once.
It will gradually improve.
If there is no progress after taking medication for 1-2 days, you should seek medical attention again.
Wishing you good health.

When dealing with prostate inflammation, also known as prostatitis, it is common to experience fever as a symptom of the infection or inflammation. In your case, you have been prescribed medications for prostatitis, and you are concerned about taking a fever reducer, such as acetaminophen (commonly known as Tylenol or Panadol), while on antibiotics and other medications.

First and foremost, it is generally safe to take acetaminophen to reduce fever while you are on antibiotics for prostatitis. Acetaminophen works by acting on the brain to lower body temperature and alleviate pain, and it does not interfere with the effectiveness of antibiotics. In fact, managing your fever can help you feel more comfortable and may allow your body to focus on fighting the infection. However, it is important to follow the recommended dosage on the medication label and not exceed the maximum daily limit.

Regarding your concern about urinary retention, it is essential to understand that certain medications prescribed for prostatitis, such as tamsulosin, are designed to help relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, which can improve urine flow and reduce symptoms of urinary retention. However, if you are experiencing significant difficulty urinating or a sensation of blockage, it is crucial to communicate this with your healthcare provider, as it may indicate a need for further evaluation or adjustment of your treatment plan.

In addition to taking fever reducers, there are several supportive measures you can take to help manage your symptoms. Staying well-hydrated is vital, as it can help flush out bacteria from your urinary tract and keep your urine diluted, which may alleviate some discomfort. Aim to drink plenty of fluids, ideally around 2 to 3 liters per day, unless otherwise directed by your physician. Avoiding irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods can also be beneficial, as these can exacerbate urinary symptoms.

As for the duration of your treatment, it is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you start to feel better before finishing the medication. Stopping antibiotics prematurely can lead to antibiotic resistance and may not fully eradicate the infection, potentially leading to a recurrence of symptoms.

If your fever persists or worsens despite taking acetaminophen, or if you experience new or worsening symptoms such as severe pain, difficulty urinating, or blood in your urine, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Your healthcare provider may need to reassess your condition and consider additional diagnostic tests or treatments.

In summary, taking acetaminophen for fever while on antibiotics for prostatitis is generally safe and can help improve your comfort. Ensure you stay hydrated, avoid irritants, and complete your antibiotic course. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or treatment, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Your health and well-being are of utmost importance, and timely communication with your medical team can help ensure a smooth recovery.
