My ear feels strange?

This afternoon, I suddenly experienced hiccups, and then I noticed a popping sound in my right ear, which occurred about 10 times in a row, with a few seconds in between each occurrence.
After resting, it happened once more.
I looked up possible issues and found that it might be otitis media.
Subsequently, my right ear started to feel strange and had a very mild pain (not exactly pain, just a sensation), as if something was there, but when I used a cotton swab, I found nothing.
Later, while using headphones to watch a video, I felt that the sound seemed quieter, but it was both ears that felt quieter, so I wasn't sure if it was just my perception.
However, I can confirm that the hearing function in both ears is the same; aside from the feeling of the headphone sound being quieter, everything else sounds normal.
I would like to ask what this might indicate and how I can improve it.
How long should I wait before seeking medical attention, and should I visit a small clinic or go to a larger hospital for an examination? I also found that it might be related to nasal allergies (I have allergic rhinitis and often take antihistamines).
Additionally, I frequently take two types of antihistamines: Allegra and Xyzal.
I would like to know if there are any long-term side effects from taking these antihistamines, such as liver, kidney, or stomach issues.
Thank you for your help!

Hello, if there are no obvious hearing abnormalities, you may observe the situation.
If the symptoms persist for more than a week without improvement, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngology clinic for examination.
As for common side effects of antihistamines, drowsiness is prevalent, and at normal dosages, they should not cause liver or kidney strain.

Understanding ear discomfort can be quite complex, as it often involves various anatomical structures and physiological processes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that could be related to several underlying issues, including eustachian tube dysfunction, middle ear problems, or even allergic reactions due to your history of allergic rhinitis.

Possible Causes of Your Symptoms
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and helps equalize pressure. Sudden changes in pressure, such as during a yawn, sneeze, or even a hiccup, can cause a sensation of popping or "booming" sounds in the ear. This could explain the "啵啵聲" (popping sound) you experienced after hiccuping. If the eustachian tube is not functioning properly, it can lead to feelings of fullness, discomfort, or even mild pain.

2. Middle Ear Issues: Conditions like otitis media (middle ear infection) can cause discomfort and changes in hearing. However, since you mentioned that your hearing seems normal otherwise, this might be less likely unless you develop additional symptoms like fever or significant pain.

3. Allergic Rhinitis: Given your history of allergic rhinitis, it’s possible that your symptoms are exacerbated by allergies. Allergic reactions can lead to inflammation and congestion in the nasal passages and eustachian tubes, affecting ear function. This could explain the sensation of fullness or pressure in your ears.

4. Hearing Changes: The perception of sound becoming quieter when using headphones could be related to eustachian tube dysfunction or even temporary threshold shifts in hearing due to pressure changes. If both ears are affected similarly, it may suggest a systemic issue rather than localized ear pathology.

When to Seek Help
If your symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, severe pain, or significant hearing loss, it would be prudent to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. You can start with a local clinic, but if your symptoms are severe or if you have concerns about the diagnosis, a larger medical center may provide more comprehensive care.

Long-term Use of Antihistamines
Regarding your use of antihistamines like "過敏" (likely referring to a common antihistamine) and "喜洛" (which may refer to a specific brand), long-term use can have side effects. Common side effects include:
- Sedation: Many antihistamines can cause drowsiness, which may affect your daily activities.

- Dry Mouth and Eyes: Antihistamines can reduce secretions, leading to dryness in the mouth and eyes.

- Potential Impact on Cognitive Function: Long-term use, especially of first-generation antihistamines, has been associated with cognitive decline in some studies.

- Gastrointestinal Issues: Some users report constipation or other digestive issues.

While most people tolerate antihistamines well, it’s essential to use them as directed and consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns about long-term use, especially if you have pre-existing conditions affecting the liver, kidneys, or gastrointestinal tract.

Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms could be linked to eustachian tube dysfunction or allergic reactions. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice if they persist or worsen is crucial. Additionally, while antihistamines can be effective for managing allergy symptoms, be mindful of their potential side effects with long-term use. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice tailored to your specific health needs.
