Will a cyst affect pregnancy?

Hello doctor, I went for a pregnancy test last Saturday and found out I am six and a half weeks pregnant.
However, I also discovered a 7 to 8 cm cyst.
I researched and found that most cysts smaller than 5 cm tend to resolve on their own.
I'm wondering if a 7 cm cyst could have an impact and if I need to terminate the pregnancy.
I've been feeling a lot of pressure in my abdomen, similar to the feeling during late pregnancy (I have given birth before).
Could this be related to the cyst? I've also experienced light bleeding over the past couple of days.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, regarding the monitoring of the cyst, it is advisable to wait for three months to see if it resolves on its own.
If it does not, please discuss it with your obstetrician.
Wishing you good health.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop on the ovaries and are quite common among women of reproductive age. While many ovarian cysts are benign and may not cause any symptoms, larger cysts, such as the 7-8 cm cyst you mentioned, can potentially lead to complications during pregnancy. Understanding the risks and symptoms associated with ovarian cysts during pregnancy is crucial for both maternal and fetal health.

Firstly, it is important to note that many cysts, particularly those that are smaller than 5 cm, often resolve on their own without any intervention. However, cysts that are larger, like the one you have, may require closer monitoring. The size of the cyst can be a significant factor in determining whether it poses a risk to your pregnancy. Larger cysts can cause discomfort and may lead to complications such as rupture or torsion (twisting of the ovary), which can be painful and may require surgical intervention.

In your case, the feeling of abdominal pressure and discomfort you are experiencing could indeed be related to the presence of the cyst. As the uterus expands during pregnancy, it can put additional pressure on surrounding structures, including the ovaries. This pressure can exacerbate any discomfort caused by the cyst. Additionally, the presence of any bleeding, even if it is minimal, should be taken seriously, as it could indicate a potential complication.

When it comes to the impact of ovarian cysts on pregnancy, research indicates that most benign cysts do not affect the growth and development of the fetus. However, if a cyst is causing significant symptoms or complications, it may necessitate medical intervention. In some cases, doctors may recommend monitoring the cyst throughout the pregnancy with regular ultrasounds to ensure it does not grow larger or cause issues.

If the cyst is determined to be benign and not causing any significant problems, it may not be necessary to remove it during pregnancy. However, if there are concerns about the cyst's nature (for example, if there is a suspicion of malignancy) or if it is causing severe symptoms, your healthcare provider may discuss the option of surgical removal. This is typically done in the second trimester when the risk of miscarriage is lower.

In summary, while a 7-8 cm ovarian cyst can potentially cause discomfort and may require monitoring, it does not automatically mean that you need to terminate your pregnancy or have the cyst removed immediately. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, who can assess your specific situation and provide personalized recommendations based on the cyst's characteristics and your overall health. Regular follow-ups and ultrasounds will help ensure both your health and the health of your baby are closely monitored throughout your pregnancy. If you experience any worsening symptoms, such as severe pain or heavy bleeding, seek medical attention promptly.
