Sperm motility
A few days ago, I had a semen analysis done, and the results showed that sperm motility was only 1% after one hour, while the normal range is 42%.
What does this mean? Since it was my first analysis, I wasn't fully erect during ejaculation, and I also didn't sleep well that night.
Could this affect the results? I personally find the report quite strange.

It indicates that only 1% of the sperm are motile.
It is recommended to return for a follow-up appointment to have the doctor explain the report to you.

Low sperm motility, defined as the percentage of sperm that are actively moving, can significantly impact male fertility. In your case, a sperm motility of only 1% compared to a normal range of around 42% is concerning and indicates a potential issue with fertility. Sperm motility is crucial because only motile sperm can swim through the female reproductive tract to reach and fertilize an egg.
There are several factors that can contribute to low sperm motility, including lifestyle choices, medical conditions, and environmental influences. For instance, factors such as obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug use can adversely affect sperm quality. Additionally, medical conditions like hormonal imbalances, infections, or anatomical issues (such as varicocele) can also play a role. Environmental factors, including exposure to toxins, heat, and radiation, may further compromise sperm motility.
Regarding your specific situation, it is important to consider the circumstances under which the semen sample was collected. You mentioned that you did not achieve full erection during ejaculation and that you had a poor night's sleep prior to the test. Both of these factors can indeed influence the quality of the semen sample. Stress, fatigue, and anxiety can lead to temporary changes in sperm production and motility. In some cases, a single semen analysis may not provide a complete picture of your fertility status, as sperm parameters can fluctuate over time.
It is also worth noting that sperm maturation takes about 2.5 months, meaning that any lifestyle changes or health issues affecting sperm production may take time to reflect in semen analysis results. Therefore, if you are concerned about your sperm motility, it may be beneficial to repeat the semen analysis after a few months, ideally after making some positive lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet, managing stress, and avoiding harmful substances.
In terms of implications for fertility, low sperm motility can reduce the chances of natural conception. However, it does not necessarily mean that conception is impossible. Many couples with low sperm motility have successfully conceived, either naturally or with assisted reproductive technologies such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
If you continue to have concerns about your sperm motility and overall fertility, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a fertility specialist. They can provide further evaluation, including a comprehensive semen analysis, hormonal testing, and possibly a physical examination to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
In summary, while a sperm motility of 1% is significantly lower than the normal range, it is essential to consider the context of the analysis and the potential for variability in sperm parameters. Taking proactive steps to improve your health and seeking professional guidance can help you better understand your fertility status and options moving forward.
