Nasopharyngitis
Hello, Doctor: Recently, during an endoscopic examination, I was unprepared and inexperienced, and halfway through, I couldn't help but pull out, which led to a prolonged sensation of water choking in my nose.
After taking hemostatic and anti-inflammatory medication, the symptoms disappeared, but two weeks later, I started to feel a slight choking sensation in my nose again.
However, the symptoms are much milder now and occur less frequently, about once or twice a day.
After researching online, it seems like it could be chronic nasopharyngitis? I would like to ask if continuing with this frequency of symptoms could lead to more serious issues.
Thank you for your clarification.
Alan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/03/24
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
The frequency is one to two times a day, which does not resemble symptoms of chronic inflammation.
If you are concerned about whether it is chronic nasopharyngitis, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation for confirmation.

More Info
Chronic nasopharyngitis, often characterized by persistent inflammation of the nasal passages and pharynx, can manifest through a variety of symptoms, including a sensation of post-nasal drip, throat irritation, and nasal congestion. Your experience of feeling a choking sensation, particularly after an endoscopic examination, may be linked to heightened sensitivity or irritation in the nasopharyngeal area. This can occur due to several factors, including anxiety, which can exacerbate the perception of discomfort in the throat and nasal passages.
Symptoms of Chronic Nasopharyngitis
Common symptoms associated with chronic nasopharyngitis include:
1. Post-nasal Drip: This is the sensation of mucus dripping down the back of the throat, which can lead to coughing, throat clearing, and a feeling of a lump in the throat.
2. Throat Irritation: Patients often report a scratchy or sore throat, which may worsen with swallowing or speaking.
3. Nasal Congestion: Chronic nasal obstruction can lead to difficulty breathing through the nose, which may also contribute to snoring or sleep disturbances.
4. Cough: A persistent cough, often worse at night, can occur due to irritation from post-nasal drip.
5. Ear Discomfort: Some individuals may experience a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ears, which can be related to Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Causes of Chronic Nasopharyngitis
The causes of chronic nasopharyngitis can be multifactorial:
1. Allergies: Allergic rhinitis can lead to chronic inflammation of the nasal passages and throat, resulting in symptoms similar to those of nasopharyngitis.
2. Infections: Recurrent viral or bacterial infections can contribute to chronic inflammation.
3. Environmental Irritants: Exposure to smoke, pollution, or strong odors can exacerbate symptoms.
4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and nasal passages, leading to chronic symptoms.
5. Anxiety and Stress: Psychological factors can heighten the perception of throat discomfort and contribute to muscle tension in the throat area.
Concerns and Management
Your concern about whether the symptoms will worsen over time is valid. Chronic inflammation can lead to complications if left untreated, including:
- Chronic Sinusitis: Prolonged inflammation can lead to sinus infections.
- Tonsillitis or Pharyngitis: Recurrent irritation can lead to inflammation of the tonsils or throat.
- Voice Changes: Chronic irritation can affect vocal cords, leading to hoarseness.
To manage chronic nasopharyngitis effectively, consider the following strategies:
1. Avoid Irritants: Minimize exposure to smoke, strong odors, and allergens.
2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin mucus and soothe throat irritation.
3. Use Saline Nasal Sprays: These can help keep nasal passages moist and reduce irritation.
4. Consider Antihistamines: If allergies are suspected, over-the-counter antihistamines may provide relief.
5. Consult a Specialist: If symptoms persist, it may be beneficial to see an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) for further evaluation and management.
Conclusion
In summary, while chronic nasopharyngitis can be bothersome, it is often manageable with lifestyle modifications and appropriate medical treatment. If your symptoms continue to recur or worsen, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying conditions and to receive tailored treatment. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider can help monitor your condition and adjust your treatment plan as necessary.
