The numbness and tightness in the legs after spinal surgery remain the same?

Hello, doctor; I just had decompression surgery on my fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae on March 29.
The surgeon said that all the compressed nerve tissue has been completely removed, and a post-operative X-ray showed no issues.
However, my left leg still feels achy and tight, and my right foot is still somewhat numb.
I also experience soreness in my lower back, and my left leg feels weak and painful when walking.
It has been 7 to 8 days since the surgery, and I find that lying in bed alleviates the soreness in my legs.
Does this mean that the surgery was unsuccessful? What can I do to improve my condition so that I can walk and run normally? Is this just part of the recovery period, or should I wait a bit longer? Thank you for your patient response.

Post-spinal surgery symptoms such as leg numbness, tightness, and discomfort can be concerning for patients, especially when they have undergone a procedure aimed at alleviating nerve compression. In your case, having had surgery on the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae to relieve pressure on the nerves, it is understandable to be anxious about the ongoing symptoms you are experiencing.

Firstly, it is important to recognize that post-operative recovery can vary significantly from person to person. While some individuals may experience immediate relief from their symptoms, others may take longer to heal and notice improvements. The timeline for recovery can depend on various factors, including the extent of the surgery, the individual’s overall health, age, and adherence to post-operative care instructions.

The symptoms you describe—persistent tightness and discomfort in the left leg, numbness in the right foot, and general soreness in the lumbar region—are not uncommon in the early stages of recovery. After spinal surgery, it is typical for patients to experience some degree of muscle soreness and tightness as the body adjusts to the changes made during the procedure. This can be exacerbated by factors such as inflammation, muscle guarding, and the healing process itself.

1. Muscle Tightness and Discomfort: The tightness you feel in your legs may be a result of muscle spasms or tension that can occur after surgery. The muscles surrounding the spine may react to the surgical intervention by tightening up, which can lead to discomfort. Gentle stretching, physical therapy, and guided exercises can help alleviate this tightness over time. It is crucial to follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding physical activity and rehabilitation.

2. Nerve Recovery: Nerve healing can take time. Even if the compressive tissue has been removed, the nerves may still be recovering from the previous pressure. Symptoms such as numbness or tingling can persist for weeks or even months post-surgery as the nerves regenerate. It is essential to be patient during this recovery phase.

3. Post-operative Care: Ensure that you are following all post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon. This may include restrictions on physical activities, recommendations for pain management, and guidelines for when to resume normal activities. If you have not yet been referred to a physical therapist, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. A physical therapist can provide tailored exercises to strengthen the muscles around your spine and improve mobility.

4. When to Seek Further Evaluation: If your symptoms do not improve over the next few weeks, or if they worsen, it is important to follow up with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They may want to conduct further imaging studies or evaluations to ensure that there are no complications, such as infection or hardware issues, that could be contributing to your ongoing discomfort.

In summary, while it is natural to be concerned about your symptoms after spinal surgery, it is also important to recognize that recovery can take time. Continue to monitor your symptoms, adhere to your post-operative care plan, and maintain open communication with your healthcare team. If you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation and guidance. Your recovery journey is unique, and with the right support and care, you can work towards regaining your strength and mobility.
