Finger joints
Hello doctor, recently I have been experiencing pain in the middle joint of my left middle finger when I make a fist or grip something, but the pain goes away when I open my hand.
The sensation of pain feels similar to eating a radish, but I can still bend my finger.
What could be the problem?

More Info
Understanding pain in the middle joint of your finger, particularly when gripping or making a fist, can be quite concerning and may stem from various underlying issues. The symptoms you describe—pain during specific movements but not at rest—suggest a few potential causes that are common in finger joint pain.
Potential Causes
1. Joint Strain or Sprain: If you've recently engaged in activities that require repetitive gripping or forceful use of your fingers, you may have strained the ligaments around the joint. This can lead to localized pain, especially when the joint is under stress.
2. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons that control finger movement can also cause pain. This is often seen in conditions like De Quervain's tenosynovitis or trigger finger, where the tendons become irritated and inflamed, leading to pain during specific movements.
3. Osteoarthritis: As we age, wear and tear on the joints can lead to osteoarthritis, which is characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. If you are experiencing pain primarily during movement, this could be a sign of early-stage arthritis.
4. Capsulitis: This condition involves inflammation of the joint capsule, which can occur due to overuse or injury. It often presents with pain during movement and may improve with rest.
5. Nerve Compression: Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to referred pain in the fingers. While this typically affects the thumb, index, and middle fingers, it can sometimes present as pain in the joints.
Recommended Solutions
1. Rest and Ice: Initially, it is crucial to rest the affected finger and avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Applying ice for 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain.
2. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication.
3. Gentle Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Once the acute pain subsides, gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help restore flexibility and strength to the joint. It is essential to perform these exercises under the guidance of a physical therapist or healthcare provider to avoid exacerbating the condition.
4. Splinting: A finger splint can help immobilize the joint and provide support during the healing process. This is particularly useful if the pain is due to tendinitis or joint strain.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the pain persists despite home treatment, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, to determine the exact cause of the pain and recommend appropriate treatment.
6. Ergonomic Adjustments: If your activities involve repetitive hand movements, consider making ergonomic adjustments to your workspace or the tools you use. This can help reduce strain on your fingers and joints.
Conclusion
Pain in the middle joint of your finger can arise from various causes, including joint strain, tendinitis, or early signs of arthritis. While home remedies such as rest, ice, and over-the-counter pain relief can be effective, persistent pain warrants a visit to a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation. Early intervention can prevent further complications and help you return to your daily activities, including playing the guitar, without discomfort.
