Post-cardiac catheterization?

Hello doctor, my father underwent a cardiac catheterization in early April, during which three stents were placed through his arm and groin.
The surgery went well, but now he experiences severe numbness in his legs every day, describing it as a tingling sensation.
He is unable to sleep well at night and is even experiencing muscle pain.
Is this normal after more than a week? If so, are there any ways to alleviate his symptoms? Thank you.

Ariel, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/04/14

Dr. Wu Xueming reply Cardiology

Based on the symptoms you described, they should not be related to cardiac catheterization.
It is recommended to consult a neurologist for further evaluation.

After a cardiac catheterization procedure, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some degree of discomfort or unusual sensations in their limbs, particularly in the legs if the catheter was inserted through the groin. However, severe leg numbness and pain, especially if it is persistent and accompanied by other symptoms, should be taken seriously.

In your father's case, the severe numbness and tingling sensations in his legs, along with muscle pain, are concerning and warrant further evaluation. While some mild discomfort can be expected after such procedures, symptoms that are severe enough to disrupt sleep and cause significant distress are not typical.
There are several potential causes for the symptoms your father is experiencing:
1. Nerve Compression or Injury: During the catheterization, there may have been pressure on the nerves in the groin area, leading to numbness or tingling in the legs. If the catheterization was performed through the femoral artery, there is a possibility of nerve irritation or compression.

2. Circulatory Issues: If there are any complications related to blood flow, such as a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) or arterial occlusion, this could lead to symptoms of numbness and pain.
3. Post-Procedure Complications: Rarely, complications such as an infection or a blood clot can occur after catheterization, which could also manifest as leg pain or numbness.

4. Muscle Strain: The position during the procedure or subsequent activity may have led to muscle strain, which can cause pain and discomfort.

Given that your father has been experiencing these symptoms for over a week, it is crucial to consult with his healthcare provider as soon as possible. They may recommend a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or MRI, to assess for any vascular or neurological issues.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations that might help alleviate his symptoms:
- Rest: Encourage your father to rest and avoid activities that may exacerbate the pain or numbness.

- Positioning: Changing positions frequently and elevating the legs may help improve circulation and reduce discomfort.

- Gentle Stretching: If tolerated, gentle stretching exercises may help relieve muscle tension.

- Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help relax muscles and improve blood flow.

- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may provide temporary relief, but he should consult with his doctor before taking any medication.

Ultimately, the best course of action is to have your father evaluated by his healthcare provider to rule out any serious complications and to receive tailored treatment for his symptoms. Prompt attention to these symptoms is important to ensure his recovery and overall well-being.
