Left Abdominal Pain Near Belly Button: Symptoms and Possible Causes - Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Occasionally experiencing pain when pressing on the left side of the abdomen near the navel, having yellowish stools with visible black particles resembling vegetable remnants, and a persistent urge to have a bowel movement?

Hello doctor, today I noticed that pressing on the left side of my abdomen near the navel occasionally causes pain; sometimes it hurts, and sometimes it doesn't.
Over the past few weeks, my stools have been mostly yellow, and occasionally I see black specks that resemble vegetable remnants (which I haven't noticed before).
I also have a persistent urge to have a bowel movement, but each time I go, I do pass stool, which is mostly formed, although occasionally it is a bit loose.
Could this indicate any underlying condition? Thank you.

It's just symptoms caused by peristalsis, so there's no need to worry.

More Info

Left abdominal pain, particularly near the belly button, can be concerning and may arise from various underlying conditions. Given your symptoms, including intermittent pain upon pressure, changes in bowel habits, and the presence of unusual stool coloration, it is essential to consider several potential causes.

1. Gastrointestinal Issues: The left side of the abdomen houses parts of the colon, including the descending colon and sigmoid colon. Conditions such as diverticulitis, which is inflammation or infection of small pouches that can form in the colon, can cause localized pain. Symptoms may include changes in bowel habits, abdominal tenderness, and sometimes fever. Additionally, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) could be a possibility, especially if you experience alternating patterns of diarrhea and constipation, along with abdominal discomfort.

2. Dietary Factors: The presence of black specks in your stool could indicate the consumption of certain foods, such as dark leafy vegetables, or it could be a sign of gastrointestinal bleeding. If the black coloration is due to bleeding, it is often referred to as "melena," which requires immediate medical evaluation. Yellow stools can indicate malabsorption issues, possibly related to dietary fat or bile production.

3. Musculoskeletal Causes: Sometimes, pain in the abdominal area can be attributed to muscle strain or injury, especially if the pain is exacerbated by movement or pressure. This is particularly relevant if you have engaged in activities that may have strained your abdominal muscles.

4. Urological Concerns: Given the proximity of the bladder to the lower abdomen, urinary tract infections (UTIs) or other urological issues could also manifest as abdominal pain. Symptoms may include a frequent urge to urinate, burning sensation during urination, or changes in urine color.

5. Other Considerations: Conditions such as hernias, ovarian cysts (in females), or even referred pain from other areas (like the kidneys) could also be contributing factors.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. A thorough physical examination, along with targeted diagnostic tests such as blood tests, stool analysis, and imaging studies (like an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan), can help clarify the diagnosis.
In the meantime, it may be beneficial to keep a symptom diary, noting the frequency and intensity of your pain, any associated symptoms (like changes in bowel habits or urinary symptoms), and dietary intake. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for your left abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Do not hesitate to reach out to a gastroenterologist or your primary care physician to discuss your symptoms in detail and explore the next steps in your care.
