What is the validity period for fecal occult blood test results?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask how often a fecal occult blood test should be done.
I had one done in the middle of last year, and the result was negative, indicating no issues.
Currently, I feel that my stool seems to be slightly narrower (but not as extreme as a pencil).
Is the fecal occult blood test I had done last year still valid, or should I repeat it? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/04/30

The validity of fecal occult blood test (FOBT) results can depend on several factors, including the individual's health status, any changes in symptoms, and the specific guidelines followed by healthcare providers. Generally, FOBT is used as a screening tool for colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal issues, and it is recommended to be performed annually for average-risk individuals starting at age 45, or earlier if there are risk factors such as a family history of colorectal cancer or personal history of gastrointestinal diseases.

In your case, since you had a negative FOBT last year, it is important to consider any new symptoms that may have arisen since then. You mentioned that your stool has become slightly thinner, which can be a cause for concern. While a change in stool caliber can be benign, it can also indicate potential issues in the gastrointestinal tract, such as strictures or masses. Therefore, even though your previous test was negative, it would be prudent to repeat the FOBT, especially if you are experiencing any new symptoms or changes in your bowel habits.

The results of a FOBT are typically considered valid for a limited time, usually up to one year, but this can vary based on individual circumstances and clinical guidelines. If there are any changes in your health or if you have concerns about your gastrointestinal health, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional testing, such as a colonoscopy, especially if there are concerning symptoms or if you have risk factors for colorectal cancer.

In summary, while your previous FOBT results were negative, the slight change in your stool could warrant a repeat test. Regular screening is essential for early detection of potential issues, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. If you have any further concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and recommendations.
