Irregular menstruation?
Hello doctor, my period started on April 7th and I had unprotected sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on April 12th, after which I experienced heavy bleeding.
This bleeding continued for 7 days and then stopped.
Since then, my period has not come.
The last time I had sexual intercourse was on April 23rd, and we used condoms throughout.
I took a pregnancy test today at 11 AM, which showed one line.
I am currently experiencing breast tenderness but have no other discomfort.
I would like to know if this situation is due to irregular menstruation or if it is influenced by sexual activity affecting my menstrual cycle.

Understanding irregular periods can be a complex issue, especially when considering various factors such as hormonal changes, stress, and sexual activity. Based on your description, it seems you experienced a significant bleeding episode after intercourse, followed by a prolonged absence of your menstrual period. Let's break down the potential causes and concerns regarding your situation.
Firstly, the bleeding you experienced after intercourse could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that it was a result of cervical irritation or trauma during intercourse, especially if it was vigorous. This can sometimes cause light bleeding, which may appear as a heavy flow initially. Another possibility is that the bleeding could be related to hormonal fluctuations, especially if you have a history of irregular periods. Hormonal imbalances can lead to unexpected bleeding patterns, including spotting or heavy bleeding after sexual activity.
Regarding the absence of your menstrual period following the bleeding episode, this could also be linked to hormonal changes. Stress, changes in weight, and even illness can disrupt your menstrual cycle. Additionally, if you were expecting your period after the bleeding stopped and it did not come, it could indicate a delay in ovulation or an anovulatory cycle, which is when the ovaries do not release an egg. This is not uncommon and can happen occasionally in women of reproductive age.
You mentioned that you took a pregnancy test and it showed a single line, indicating a negative result. However, it’s important to consider the timing of the test. If you tested too early, it might not have detected a pregnancy even if one were present. If you continue to experience symptoms such as breast tenderness or any other signs of pregnancy, it may be advisable to retest in a few days or consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In terms of whether your irregular periods are due to sexual activity or other factors, it is likely a combination of both. Sexual activity can influence hormonal levels, and if there was any stress or anxiety surrounding the experience, that could further impact your cycle.
If your periods remain irregular or if you experience any additional concerning symptoms, such as severe pain, excessive bleeding, or other unusual changes, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend further investigations, such as blood tests to check hormone levels or an ultrasound to assess your reproductive organs.
In summary, irregular periods can result from a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, and physical changes. The bleeding after intercourse could be a benign occurrence, but if your menstrual cycle does not normalize or if you have concerns about potential pregnancy, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Regular monitoring of your menstrual cycle and any associated symptoms will help you and your healthcare provider understand your reproductive health better.
