Dorsal foot scar and peeling issue?
Hello Doctor, I had a car accident on March 5th, resulting in a severe abrasion on the dorsum of my foot, which has formed a scar.
Recently, the scar has been peeling continuously.
I have been using scar gel, and I'm unsure if this is related.

I would like to ask the doctor: 1.
Is it normal for a scar to peel like this? 2.
Should I apply lotion or petroleum jelly daily for care? 3.
Can I continue using the scar gel? Thank you for your hard work, Doctor!

It's too dry; you can continue using the scar ointment and periodically apply petroleum jelly.

More Info
When dealing with scar peeling on the foot, particularly after an injury such as a severe abrasion from an accident, it is essential to understand the healing process and the appropriate care methods. Based on your description and the context of your injury, let’s address your questions and provide some insights into the situation.
1. Is it normal for scars to peel?
Yes, it is quite common for scars to peel as they heal. The skin undergoes a natural process of regeneration, and during this time, the outer layer of skin may dry out and flake off. This peeling can be a sign that the skin is renewing itself. However, if the peeling is accompanied by excessive redness, swelling, or discharge, it may indicate an infection or other complications, and you should consult a healthcare professional.
2. Should I apply lotion or petroleum jelly daily?
Yes, applying a moisturizer such as lotion or petroleum jelly can be beneficial for scar care. Keeping the scar moisturized helps to prevent excessive dryness and peeling, which can lead to itching and discomfort. Moisturizers can also promote a more favorable healing environment, potentially improving the appearance of the scar over time. It is advisable to apply the moisturizer at least once or twice a day, especially after bathing when the skin is still slightly damp, as this can help lock in moisture.
3. Can I continue using scar gel?
If the scar gel you are using is specifically designed for scar treatment and does not contain any irritating ingredients, you can continue to use it. Many scar gels contain silicone, which is known to help flatten and soften scars. However, if you notice any irritation or if the peeling worsens after applying the gel, it may be wise to discontinue its use and consult with a healthcare provider. It’s also important to follow the instructions provided with the product regarding frequency and duration of use.
Additional Care Tips for Scar Healing:
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect the scar from sun exposure, as UV rays can darken scars and make them more noticeable. Use sunscreen with a high SPF or cover the scar with clothing when outdoors.
- Gentle Cleansing: Clean the area gently with mild soap and water. Avoid scrubbing the scar, as this can irritate the skin and delay healing.
- Patience is Key: Scars can take time to heal and mature. The appearance of a scar may change over months or even years, so patience is essential during this process.
- Consult a Specialist: If you have concerns about the healing process, or if the scar appears to be problematic, consider consulting a dermatologist or a healthcare professional who specializes in wound care. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
In summary, peeling of the scar is a normal part of the healing process, and maintaining moisture with lotions or petroleum jelly can aid in recovery. Continuing the use of scar gel is generally acceptable, provided it does not cause irritation. Always monitor the healing process and seek professional advice if you have any concerns.
