There is a sensation of heat in the genital area?

I am 23 weeks pregnant, and at night while sleeping, I occasionally feel a sensation of warmth in my genital area (this has been happening since I was in my early weeks of pregnancy).
When I touch my underwear, it feels somewhat like a light mist touching my skin in the morning, giving a moist sensation, but in reality, my underwear is dry.
Could you please explain why this is happening? Thank you!

ANNIE, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/02/26

Dr. Chen Nengjin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Annie: The basal metabolic rate during pregnancy increases because hormone stimulation leads to an increase in secretions.
Therefore, this phenomenon is something that individuals may not need to worry too much about.

During pregnancy, many women experience various physical changes due to hormonal fluctuations and increased blood flow, which can lead to sensations that may be unusual or concerning. One such sensation is the feeling of warmth or heat in the genital area, which you have described experiencing during your 23rd week of pregnancy.

This sensation can be attributed to several factors:
1. Increased Blood Flow: During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant changes to support the growing fetus. One of these changes is an increase in blood volume and circulation. This heightened blood flow can lead to a feeling of warmth in various parts of the body, including the genital area. The increased vascularity can also cause a sensation of warmth or even slight swelling.

2. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy hormones, particularly progesterone and estrogen, play a crucial role in preparing the body for childbirth. These hormones can affect the body's temperature regulation and may contribute to feelings of warmth or heat in the genital area. Hormonal changes can also lead to increased vaginal secretions, which might create a sensation of moisture, even if the underwear remains dry.

3. Increased Metabolism: Pregnant women often experience an increase in their basal metabolic rate. This can lead to an overall increase in body temperature, which may manifest as localized warmth in certain areas, including the genital region.

4. Changes in Vaginal Secretions: As pregnancy progresses, many women notice changes in their vaginal discharge. It may become thicker or more abundant, which can contribute to a feeling of moisture or warmth. This is a normal part of pregnancy and is usually not a cause for concern unless accompanied by unusual symptoms such as itching, burning, or an unpleasant odor, which could indicate an infection.

5. Positioning and Environment: The way you sleep or the temperature of your sleeping environment can also influence how you perceive warmth in the genital area. If you are sleeping in a warm room or using heavy bedding, this could exacerbate the sensation of heat.

While the sensation of warmth in the genital area during pregnancy is generally considered normal, it is essential to monitor for any accompanying symptoms that may indicate a problem. If you experience itching, burning, unusual discharge, or any other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, the heat sensation you are experiencing in the genital area during your pregnancy is likely due to increased blood flow, hormonal changes, and possibly changes in vaginal secretions. These are common occurrences during pregnancy and are generally not a cause for concern. However, always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have any worries or if your symptoms change, as they can provide personalized advice and reassurance.
