Itching after hair removal?
After hair removal in the area above the genitals, there hasn't been much issue, but as the hair begins to grow back, a few hair follicles have started to itch like hives (currently 6 spots).
They are currently swollen and red, and mainly itch when touched or rubbed by clothing; if not touched or rubbed, there is no sensation at all.
I have applied Mentholatum AD, but it hasn't been very effective, so I am currently using breathable tape to reduce contact and prevent itching.
What initial treatments can I try? I'm unsure if this requires medical attention.
Thank you.

Hello: It is recommended to enhance moisturization or apply a skin repair cream after hair removal.
When itching occurs, cold compresses or ice packs can be used to alleviate the itchiness.
If the itching persists, oral antihistamines can also be considered for relief.
If the skin condition does not improve or worsens, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you!

More Info
Dealing with itching after hair removal, especially in sensitive areas like the pubic region, can be quite uncomfortable. It’s not uncommon to experience irritation or itching as hair begins to regrow after removal, particularly if the hair was pulled out by the root. Here are some tips and insights to help you manage this situation effectively.
Understanding the Itching
The itching you’re experiencing is likely due to a combination of factors:
1. Hair Regrowth: As the hair starts to grow back, it can cause irritation to the skin, especially if the hair is coarse or curly. The new hair may also be trapped under the skin, leading to inflammation and itching.
2. Skin Sensitivity: The skin in the pubic area is particularly sensitive, and hair removal methods such as plucking can cause trauma to the skin, leading to redness and itching.
3. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, products used during or after hair removal (like creams or lotions) can cause allergic reactions, leading to itching and irritation.
Initial Relief Strategies
Here are some strategies you can try to alleviate the itching:
1. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and soothe itching. Use a clean cloth soaked in cold water or an ice pack wrapped in a towel.
2. Moisturizers: While you mentioned using a specific lotion (Manshure AD), consider trying a fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel. These can help hydrate the skin and reduce irritation.
3. Avoid Irritation: Since you’ve already taken steps to minimize friction by using breathable tape, continue to avoid tight clothing that can rub against the area. Loose-fitting underwear can help reduce irritation.
4. Over-the-Counter Treatments: You might consider using an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation and itching. However, use it sparingly and only for a short duration, as prolonged use can lead to skin thinning.
5. Antihistamines: If the itching is severe, an oral antihistamine (like Benadryl) may help alleviate the itching sensation. However, be cautious about drowsiness as a side effect.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If the itching persists or worsens, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, pus, or fever), it’s important to consult a healthcare professional. They can assess the area and determine if there’s an underlying issue that needs to be addressed, such as an infection or an allergic reaction.
Preventive Measures for Future Hair Removal
To minimize itching and irritation in the future, consider the following:
1. Gentle Hair Removal Methods: If possible, explore hair removal methods that are less traumatic to the skin, such as shaving with a sharp razor or using depilatory creams designed for sensitive areas.
2. Exfoliation: Regularly exfoliating the area can help prevent ingrown hairs, which can contribute to itching. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub or a soft washcloth.
3. Aftercare: After hair removal, apply a soothing lotion or gel to calm the skin. Avoid products with alcohol or strong fragrances that can irritate the skin.
4. Patch Testing: If you’re trying new products, do a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions before applying them to larger areas.
In conclusion, while itching after hair removal can be bothersome, there are several strategies you can employ to find relief. If symptoms persist or worsen, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice for a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment options.
