Missed menstruation and emergency contraception?

I would like to ask the doctor, I had unprotected intercourse on the 21st of last month and took the emergency contraceptive pill.
This week, my period is due but hasn't arrived yet.
I have white, odorless discharge.
Does this mean I am already pregnant, or could it be that the emergency contraceptive pill has affected the timing of my period?

Ru, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/05/15

Hello, after taking the emergency contraceptive pill, your period may not necessarily arrive within a week; just monitor your situation.

When it comes to missed periods after taking emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), there are several factors to consider. Emergency contraceptive pills, such as Plan B (levonorgestrel) or Ella (ulipristal acetate), are designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. They work primarily by delaying ovulation, and their effectiveness diminishes the longer you wait to take them after unprotected sex.

In your case, since you had unprotected intercourse on the 21st of last month and took the emergency contraceptive pill, it is important to understand that ECPs can indeed affect your menstrual cycle. Some women may experience a delay in their period after taking ECPs, while others may have their period arrive earlier than expected. This is due to the hormonal changes that the pills induce in your body.

The white, odorless discharge you mentioned is not necessarily an indicator of pregnancy. It could be a normal physiological discharge or a result of hormonal fluctuations caused by the emergency contraceptive. If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken at least one week after your missed period.

If your period does not arrive within a week or if you have any symptoms of pregnancy (such as nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue), it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can perform a blood test to confirm pregnancy and discuss your options moving forward.

In summary, missed periods after taking emergency contraception can occur due to the hormonal effects of the medication. It is essential to monitor your body and consider taking a pregnancy test if your period does not arrive as expected. If you have further concerns or experience unusual symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a good idea.
