Varicose veins
I recently underwent a self-funded endovenous glue ablation for varicose veins.
About a week later, I started experiencing soreness in the upper outer part of my right calf.
Prior to the surgery, I had soreness in the back of my right calf.
Is it possible that the surgery was unsuccessful? Will I need to undergo another procedure? Thank you for your help! 🙏🏻

Post-surgery pain after varicose vein treatment is a common concern among patients, and it can arise for various reasons. In your case, you recently underwent a glue-assisted varicose vein surgery and are experiencing soreness in the upper outer part of your right calf about a week post-operation. It's understandable to be worried about whether this indicates a failure of the procedure or if another surgery might be necessary.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that some degree of pain and discomfort is expected after any surgical procedure, including minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins. The glue used in the procedure works by sealing the affected veins, and while this is generally effective, the body still goes through a healing process that can involve inflammation and pain. The soreness you are experiencing could be a normal part of this healing process, especially if it is localized and not accompanied by other alarming symptoms such as severe swelling, redness, or fever.
However, it is also crucial to differentiate between normal post-operative pain and signs of complications. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you notice any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies to assess the status of the treated veins and determine if there are any complications, such as a blood clot or incomplete closure of the vein.
In terms of whether the surgery was successful, it’s essential to understand that the full effects of varicose vein treatments may take some time to manifest. The initial soreness may not necessarily indicate a failure of the procedure. Many patients report varying degrees of discomfort for several weeks following surgery, and this often resolves as the body heals.
Regarding the possibility of needing another surgery, this is typically not determined until a thorough evaluation is conducted. If the initial procedure was successful, the pain should gradually decrease over time. If there are concerns about the effectiveness of the treatment, your doctor may suggest conservative management options such as compression therapy, pain management, or, in some cases, further intervention.
In summary, while post-surgical pain is common and can be expected after varicose vein treatment, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns about the pain you are experiencing or if it does not improve, it is crucial to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and help ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly. Remember, open communication with your healthcare team is key to addressing any concerns you may have during your recovery process.
