Irregular Menstrual Flow After Emergency Contraception - Obstetrics and Gynecology

It feels like my menstrual flow is not coming out?

Hello doctor, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on May 16, but I noticed that the condom slipped off.
I immediately went to buy emergency contraception and took it (within about 10 minutes after the intercourse).
I took Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg.
On the 18th, I had some brown discharge, and starting on the 19th, I noticed bright red blood, which also appeared to have clots.
Today (the 20th), I still have some, but the amount on the pad is not much.
When I go to the bathroom, I don't feel much, but it seems like there are clots, and when I wipe, there is quite a bit of blood, roughly the size of a full wet wipe (also bright red).
Can this be considered my period? I received the HPV nine-valent vaccine last month; could this have any effect?

More Info

After taking emergency contraception, it is not uncommon to experience irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting. This can be attributed to the hormonal changes induced by the emergency contraceptive pill, such as Levonorgestrel (often sold under the brand name Plan B or similar). The primary mechanism of action for these pills is to prevent ovulation; however, they can also alter the uterine lining and affect the menstrual cycle.

In your case, since you took the emergency contraceptive pill shortly after the incident, the bleeding you are experiencing could be a side effect of the medication. The brown discharge you noticed initially is often old blood, which can occur as the body adjusts to the hormonal changes. The subsequent bright red blood, along with the presence of clots, indicates that your body is likely shedding the uterine lining, which can happen after taking emergency contraception.

It's important to note that this bleeding may not necessarily be your regular menstrual period. Emergency contraception can cause your next period to come earlier or later than expected, and the flow may be lighter or heavier than usual. The timing and characteristics of your bleeding can vary widely from one individual to another.

Regarding the HPV vaccine you received, it is unlikely to have a direct impact on your menstrual cycle or the bleeding you are experiencing. The HPV vaccine is designed to protect against certain strains of the human papillomavirus and does not typically interfere with hormonal contraceptives or emergency contraception.

If the bleeding continues for an extended period, becomes excessively heavy, or is accompanied by severe pain, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation to rule out any other potential issues, such as an ectopic pregnancy or other gynecological conditions.

In summary, the irregular bleeding you are experiencing after taking emergency contraception is likely a normal side effect of the medication. It may not be your regular menstrual period, and the HPV vaccination should not affect this situation. However, if you have concerns or if your symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step.
