Repeated cavities in the wisdom teeth?
Hello Doctor: The gum in the upper right area where my wisdom tooth is located often swells and develops holes.
It usually heals on its own, but after a few days or weeks, it starts to hurt again.
Strangely, only that area is affected, and there are no issues elsewhere.
This condition has been ongoing for about two to three months.
I would like to ask if it is possible that I am getting my wisdom tooth, or could it be a sign of oral cancer? Thank you.
🙏🙏🙏

Hello: It is recommended to directly ask an oral surgeon to perform X-ray imaging and biopsy for confirmation.

More Info
Recurring gum issues around wisdom teeth can be quite common and are often related to the position and health of the wisdom teeth themselves. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing recurrent swelling and ulceration in the gum tissue surrounding your upper right wisdom tooth. This condition can be attributed to several factors, and I will outline some potential causes and concerns below.
Possible Causes
1. Impacted Wisdom Tooth: If your wisdom tooth is partially erupted or impacted, it can create a pocket where food particles and bacteria can accumulate. This can lead to inflammation and infection of the surrounding gum tissue, commonly referred to as pericoronitis. Symptoms often include swelling, pain, and sometimes the formation of pus.
2. Gum Disease: Gingivitis or periodontitis can also cause localized gum issues. If plaque and tartar build-up around the wisdom tooth, it can lead to gum inflammation and recurrent ulcers. This is more likely if oral hygiene is not optimal in that area.
3. Cyst Formation: In some cases, a cyst can develop around an impacted wisdom tooth. These cysts can cause swelling and discomfort, and they may require surgical intervention if they become problematic.
4. Oral Cancer: While it is understandable to be concerned about the possibility of oral cancer, it is relatively rare, especially in younger individuals. However, persistent ulcers that do not heal, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as significant pain, changes in the texture of the tissue, or unusual growths, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Recommendations
1. Dental Evaluation: It is crucial to see a dentist or an oral surgeon for a thorough examination. They may take X-rays to assess the position of your wisdom tooth and determine if it is impacted or if there are other underlying issues.
2. Improved Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Ensure that you are brushing and flossing effectively, especially around the wisdom tooth area. Consider using an antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce bacteria.
3. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If the swelling and pain persist or worsen, or if you notice any new symptoms, seek dental care promptly.
4. Possible Extraction: If the wisdom tooth is determined to be the source of your recurring gum issues, your dentist may recommend extraction. This can often resolve the problem and prevent further complications.
5. Follow-Up Care: After any treatment, follow your dentist's instructions for care. This may include avoiding certain foods, using prescribed mouth rinses, or taking medications to manage pain and inflammation.
Conclusion
In summary, while your symptoms are concerning, they are more likely related to the position of your wisdom tooth or gum disease rather than oral cancer. However, only a dental professional can provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It is essential to address these issues sooner rather than later to prevent further complications and to maintain your oral health. Please make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to discuss your symptoms and receive the necessary care.
